I am currently a year 11 student aspiring to study medicine and i am nearing the point where i decide my a levels and I was wondering if not taking maths would hinder my options in unis.
I am aware that maths is not a required subject unless it’s to do with oxbridge applications but i’ve had people say to me that subject choices for medicine can change on a year to year basis so i wasn’t too sure…..

hi i think it is the best to check the university requirements because some universities might favour maths over any other 3rd subject alongside biology and chemistry a levels since it is really competitive. however, you should be fine with a third option that you'd enjoy too!😊
Seen this advice elsewhere and wish someone had told me this when I was applying for sixth form: Take a look at university courses in what you want to do (this case being medicine) and look at the entry requirements. RG universities would be a good place to start but also have a look at the top universities for medicine and see their requirements

I know despite everyone's comments of "you don't need maths" which is technically true, not taking maths will hinder applications. Especially considering how maths-heavy chemistry and biology can be (of which atleast chemistry is required for medicine), taking maths is highly advised, and most courses that have a requirement of subjects, need maths to apply. If you're worried about not doing well in maths and that's why you wouldn't want to take it, I still think it would help you more to sit through it for two years and ask teachers for help than to not do maths. Personally.
You don't need maths unless you're applying to Oxbridge. But it will open up more courses for you if you change your mind in the future. If you're set on Med, just do chem + bio and a 3rd you're interested in.

You could consider taking physics/economics/psychology as your third option instead of maths. As these are still maths/science heavy A Levels they will still be well-regarded by unis.
