Former school withholding UCAS reference, now panicking.

I contacted my former guidance teacher to request a UCAS reference the week the schools in my area went back after the October holidays (contact was made on the 29th October). She agreed to get one of my former teachers to provide the reference and said it would be ready in about 2 weeks so I emailed back after 3 weeks and got no response (She is usually on the ball with emails so surprised me), tried emailing again the following week but no reply and again no reply the week after that. To add to my troubles, despite contacting them a good 2 and a half weeks there deadline to see if my reference was complete, it is now past the internal deadline for my former school so i'm worried even if they have done the reference, they won't be able to input it so I can submit my application.

She also asked me to link my application to the school using the buzzword (both in the normal way and the applying independently but requesting a reference way) but I have tried that multiple times and it has been rejected every time.

I have since tried to make contact with her twice by phoning/emailing the school office but I all I get is the admin support assistant saying she has forwarded my enquiry and no further reply. I'm down to my last line of defence which is to put a letter in the post, I'll do that today and send it first class so it's hopefully there tomorrow but I can't see that working as the office staff probably just open all the mail.

I have contacted my preferred universities this week and are awaiting their replies but I doubt they will be able to help.

I left school to do an online open university module for a year so I would get the open university to provide me a reference however they can't provide me with one until I complete the module and I want to avoid taking a gap year at all costs.

All I want is advice to help me further as I don't want to not be able to go to university over my former school never giving me the reference they agreed to provide, I know i've got until 29th January to get my application in before the equal consideration deadline but I would rather sort it sooner rather than later so i'm not panicking because the deadline is approaching.

Who is this person's line manager?
Ring and ask to arrange an appointment in person with the guidance teacher and if that isn't possible then ask to arrange an appointment with their line manager as you want to raise a formal complaint. Writing a letter isn't going to get you anywhere especially with the Christmas holiday coming up.

Alternatively are you able to get in touch and on good terms with any individual subject teachers in the school? Asking if they'll provide a UCAS reference directly as an independent referee might be a way to bypass the person who is ghosting you.

Thanks for your reply, I was on pretty good terms with the teacher who was going to be providing the reference and I still have her email address so I'll email her just shortly. I'll also phone the school call this morning to see if I can get an appointment with my former guidance teacher, If I can't get an appointment with her I presume her line manager would be the deputy head in charge of the house I was in??? Even I can get a reference from this teacher, I still want to make a complaint because of the stress and worry this has caused me although i'll maybe wait to make a complaint until after I get a reference as I don't want them putting something bad in my reference because of the complaint.

I've just heard back from one of my universities and they have said I can submit my application without a reference for now and they will make the reference a part of the offer they give me, at least if I get a similar response from the rest of the universities it gives me more time but i'm going to need to sort it eventually. I've emailed the teacher and are awaiting their response and if I don't get a response by the end of the day tomorrow i'm going to phone the school.

Just a wee update, I have replies from my other choices and they are insistent on an academic reference being uploaded at the time of sending my application. Phoned the school and asked for an appointment with my former guidance teacher but apparently all the guidance teachers are busy conducting S2 and S4 guidance interviews until the end of term, I asked for the deputy head (presuming she is her line manager) to make a complaint as PQ advised and was told I have to use the published complaints procedure which is writing in or emailing the office (which if my current experience is to go by, both will be ignored). I have attempted to contact the teacher who is meant to be providing my reference but I haven't had a reply as of yet, i'll give her until the end of the week then i'll send a follow up email next week if I haven't had a reply yet. I'm just getting more stressed by the day knowing that the school might ruin my future over this single reference.

I started to think I might have to resign myself to hoping there are clearing spaces in July on the course I want to do at one of my preferred unis and hope the module results for the open university are published by that time so they can provide a reference for me.

One of my choices advised me to contact UCAS for advice. Whilst I doubt they will be able to help, I contacted them just to cover my back.
Worse case scenario I’d submit the applications pre-deadline without a reference. It’s more important to be an on time app and your choices can ask for it later. Relying on a bit of goodwill from them but better than resigning yourself to clearing.

Thanks for your reply, in a worse case scenario (which I won't think about until mid January), should I email the unis back and ask if I can submit my application and get a reference at a later date or shall I just click the box which says no reference needed and hope for the best? What would be the cut-off for getting a reference in a conditional offer if they were okay with that as I know i'd be able to get one from the open university when my module is complete but by the time the EMA is marked, that might not be until the end of July/start of August depending on when the results are released, of course I hope I can get the school to add mine to UCAS before the cut off date but that's looking unlikely to be honest.

Personally if it comes to it I would just click the 'no reference required' box in Jan rather than going back and forth with your choices again.

It's up to the unis when they require the reference by. For some, it may form part of the consideration process of your application, so they may set a relatively short deadline (a couple of weeks, a month, again up to them). Others won't care so much and would just add it as an offer condition with a late summer deadline.

Hypothetically you could be rejected for submitting an incomplete application - but an incomplete on time application is better than a complete one to a course that has closed to new applications.

Thought I would give an update on my situation. I ended up sending a letter to my former guidance teacher anyway on the off chance I would get a reply and I did this morning, she said that all my emails were go her "others" folders so weren't showing up unless she checked them. The reason my link to the buzzword was denied was apparently because I was no longer a pupil (even though I was trying to link using the method where you could request a reference even if you were applying independently). Anyway, she told me to put her as an independent referee and she would do a reference for me so hopefully now i'll just need to wait for her to do the reference which will probably be into the new year and i'm sorted.

Can you not try and approach and private tutor online who is willing to offer this service.

Just another quick update, I received the reference yesterday however the teacher who gave me the reference (dated 6th November so it obviously had been done but my former guidance teacher hadn’t got back to me) has emailed it directly to me rather than inputting it into UCAS. I’ve tried contacting the school again but no reply so far, do you think if I send it to the universities directly, they’d be okay with this or do I need to continue to try and make contact with the school to have it inputted the correct way. Thanks everyone for your help, I feel like I’m at the stage where I can relax because I’m going to have a complete application.
