What is fine art like at Newcastle university ?

Hi, I’m currently about to send my UCAS application off but i wanted to know more about a BA Fine art degree at newcastle university. They seem to be quite art history focused, which although i find interesting, I would prefer a studio heavy course. If you are currently studying art here, what has your overall experience been like ?

In first 2 years only 1 day of the week is dedicated to art history lectures/seminars. In 3rd year you write your dissertation. In the fourth, there is no art history at all. So you have plenty plenty of time for studio work!

Hi @cheesecakeloun

If you're interested in finding out more about the structure of our Fine Art course at NCL Uni, you can follow the link to our course page ( https://www.ncl.ac.uk/undergraduate/degrees/w150/ ) and from there you can click the "modules and learning" button.

This section of our website breaks down what modules you would study in each year of study. It also tells you which modules are compulsory, and which of the modules are optional. This should give you a clearer idea of how much studio time you would have, and how much art history you would study.

Hope this helps! 🙂

Hi there,

That's so exciting to hear that you're pursuing fine art at uni !! I was just wondering whether you had considered us? My housemate is in y3 Fine Art and is having a great time. You can find our course details and career paths information on our website. Alternatively, you can request a prospectus.

Also, the UniBuddy platform is a great way to directly chat with ambassadors at the universities you're considering.
Hope this helps,
Charlotte, Student Ambassador 🙂
