Who is Jesus?

Based on the bible he was god's son.

Based on historic facts he was born in Nazaret and messed with the Pharisees.

One is for sure: he was responsible for the new religion Christianity.

In Islam, he was a Prophet, not a God.
Here is his full story:
His mother was Lady Mary, daughter of a pious man named Imraan and a woman names Hanah.
Before her birth, when she was 80+ years old, Hanah longed for a child after watching a bird feed its child. They prayed to God that He gives them a child and Hanah vowed that this child would be devoted to the masjid (as long as it was a boy).

Now, back then, in Islam, the judgement was that if one made a vow, they had to stick to it no matter what.

So, Lady Mary was born in due course and she was raised by Prophet Zacharias and his wife Elizabeth, but, to keep her mother's promise, she would live in Masjid Al-Aqsa in present day Jerusalem in a hidden living space that can still be visited today. There she would study and praise God for all she had been give.

Prophet Zacharias' son, Prophet Yahyaa (John) was the cousin of Maryam (Mary), keep that in mind.

This was how she lived until she was about 14/15 years old. She went out to run some errands and when she was in an alley way, she saw a handsome young man following behind her. She immediately felt scared and vulnerable.

That man said to her, "I am a messenger of Allaah (an angel taking the form of a man) and I have come to give you good tidings of bearing a son."
She replied, "How can that be, when no man has ever touched me and I have not engaged in sexual relations?"
He replied, "Allaah willed it to be so, so it will be so".
Then, he blew the soul of Jesus into her neck and she fell pregnant.
Now, Maryam had to hide her pregnancy for as long as she could as people knew that she was not married and if she told anyone, they would assume the worst.

Remember her cousin? Yahyaa? He noticed the signs of pregnancy on her while they were working together, but every time he told himself, no, she can't have done something like that. It went on like this until he couldn't keep it in anymore and confronted her with it.
"Mary", he started, "Do trees grow without rain? Do plants grow without seeds? How can there be a child without a father?"
Mary replied, "At the beginning of time, didn't God Create the trees and plants without rain or seeds? And didn't He Create Adam and Eve without a mother OR a father?" from this, he knew that this would be a blessed birth.

So I'm going to skip over to when Jesus was born.
When he was born, Mary vowed on the order of Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) to not talk to the people for 40 days. She returned to the village and people immediately started slandering her, saying that she was a pious woman, why would she fornicate.
She pointed to Jesus and the people replied, "How can we talk to a baby? Are you disrespecting us?"
Then Jesus, 40 days old, spoke.
He said, "I am a slave of God, He will give me a book and make me a Prophet. He will Create blessings wherever I go and will order me to pray, make zakaah and live accordingly to His rules. He will also order me to respect my mother. And peace be upon the day I was born, the day I die and the day I will be ressurected".

Upon that, the people quite literally shut up.

At aged 30, Jesus received Prophethood and was told to teach the Injeel (the ORIGINAL gospel, not whatever books christians follow these days). And at aged 33, the Jews and Romans plotted to kill him, and it was revealed to him what to do.

He had 12 Companions with him, and he asked, "Who among you will take my place, be killed in my place and be my companion in Paradise?" The youngest of the 12 volunteered 3 times, and so, Jesus ascended to the sky and the youngster was made to look like Jesus and was Crucified in his place.

Up till today, Prophet Jesus resides among the angels in the 2nd sky:
just to make it clear, HE IS NOT DEAD.

Prophet Muhammad told of his return.
The return of Jesus to the Earth will be among the signs of the End of Times.
It is said that he will descend on the wings of 2 angels in East Damascus on a White minaret (not confirmed if it is of a masjid though).

Anyway, sorry if this is a lot to process, but this is what we muslims believe about Jesus. If you'd like to know more, reply to this.

'Now, back then, in Islam...'
Islam was only founded around the 700s, so not sure how that was defining the laws before the year 0

In the Bible

The Gospel of John. The first chapter truly tells us who Jesus is,

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.

Verse 14:
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Jesus is God

Check out the Isaiah who was a prophet....he prophesied about Jesus
