Cannot decide which Uni to choose for Mental Health Nursing Degree?

Howdy,

So I may be getting ahead of myself but I start a Fast track Access to HE health professions course in February of 2025 and it finishes in June meaning id hopefully be able to start university Sept 2025. I'm between choices atm and will be going to their open events next year to check them all out. But does anyone have a recount of their experience or thoughts on the course and the university. I wont be partaking in night life etc and plan to live with my partner or at home as opposed to accommodation; so nightlife wont be a thought for me in choosing.

So which is the better university for Mental Health Nursing undergraduate course?
Northumbria University, Newcastle
Teesside University
Sunderland University

Any info on placements and study etc is greatly appreciated.

Any info is appreciated, TIA

You might need to reconsider your timings. Nursing is a competitive degree so your UCAS application needs to be submitted by the equal consideration deadline in January for Sep 2025 entry. However, you usually need an academic reference from your course tutor, which you're not going to be able to do if the course only starts in Feb. It might be worth calling admissions at each of your choices and asking if a reference from an employer would be acceptable instead.

Hi kvrstudent,

The University of Sunderland are hosting a NHS Professions Open Evening in March, if you would like to come along and discuss your plans. You'll get the chance to learn more about placements and take a look around our learning spaces.

https://www.sunderland.ac.uk/open-days/nhs-professions-mar-2025/

We also have a Virtual Experience online you can take a look at in the meantime.

https://experience.sunderland.ac.uk/

You can apply for our September 2025 intake now, before your Access has started/finished.

Let me know if there is anything else you're unsure about.

I have applied to these three starting in 2025 for adult nursing, currently, I'm leaning towards Teesside as it is easier to get to for me but honestly do what you think is best. Also, I recommend seeing about what areas your placements are in and choosing ones that are easily accessible.

Hi kvrstudent

Applications are open now and it is standard that applications are be submitted prior to any Access course would finish. You can apply now via www.UCAS.com and enter your course end date in the future. Any offer to study made prior to the end would be made on the condition you achieve the required grades.

Let me know if you're unsure about anything else.

Hi there!

That's so exciting, are you looking forward to going to university in the future? As mentioned in other responses, applications are open now for a September 2025 start, and you'll need to apply before the UCAS equal consideration deadline. However, you could also look at applying through Clearing if the course is available then, as well as considering a January start for 2026 too if the university you choose is offering that option.

It's great to hear that you're considering Teesside for mental health nursing! What draws you to this course?

One main plus about Teesside is the facilities, where you can practice your skills in industry-standard settings such as the mock hospital wards or simulated home. Check out all of our health facilities here. You'll also spend 50% of your time on the course learning theory at uni and 50% of your time on placement, allowing you to gain skills alongside professionals in the real world. Due to Teesside's close partnerships, there's a wide variety of placement types including hospital, community, GP and potentially prison.

Check out the course page here for loads more info on the course and what it's like to study at Teesside.

I'd definitely recommend attending an open day, so you can check out the facilities in person and chat to lecturers and current students. The next one is on Saturday 21 June, and you can book your place here.

I hope that helps, and best of luck with your fast track course, and applying to uni.

Thanks!
G 😄
