university choices

i'm honestly so stuck on what 5 universities i should choose. i'm a double performing arts and psychology student who is predicted two L2D* and an A and received good GCSE results too, however, universities that accept two BTEC subjects are difficult to find. i want to study forensic psychology if i can but psychology alone is also an option and currently have only settled on oxford brookes and manchester metropolitan university. any advice would be greatly appreciated <3

You could apply with those and add in more over the next month so that you have a little more time to look.
I have known people to have enjoyed Reading and Winchester?

Hi luvf0les,

I hope you’re well. I completely understand where you’re coming from—I did a BTEC (Applied Science) and had similar challenges finding universities that accept BTEC subjects. I studied for a BSc in Biological Sciences, and while things may have changed since I applied via UCAS in 2019/2020, I found emailing university admissions teams helpful. I also focused on courses that listed tariff points as entry requirements.

It’s great that you’ve already shortlisted Oxford Brookes and Manchester Metropolitan University! Oxford Brookes has an accredited Psychology degree and is particularly supportive of students with diverse qualifications like BTECs. In my cohort, around 50% of us didn’t follow the traditional 3 A-level route. Manchester is also a fantastic city that I’ve enjoyed visiting, so it’s a great choice too.

Some universities are more flexible with BTEC requirements than others, so here are a few suggestions based on my research and conversations with colleagues:

University of Portsmouth: They offer a well-regarded Forensic Psychology course and are generally BTEC-friendly.

Liverpool John Moores University: They have strong psychology programmes and accept BTEC qualifications. A few PhD students I know completed their undergraduate or master’s degrees there (though in Biology/Biomed). It’s part of the same faculty as the psychology programmes, so it’s somewhat comparable. The city itself is also vibrant and student-friendly.

University of Huddersfield: Known for being inclusive of BTEC students, they offer a range of psychology-related courses.

Coventry University: Offers a Forensic Psychology degree and has a reputation for accessibility to BTEC students.

Sheffield Hallam University: Another great option with strong links to applied psychology fields. One of my supervisors is at Sheffield Hallam, and I’ve been impressed with the campus and the level of research being conducted there.

UWE Bristol: UWE Bristol was my insurance choice for BSc Biological Sciences, and I struggled to decide between it and Oxford Brookes. I ultimately chose Brookes due to its proximity (I applied during the COVID-19 pandemic), but UWE Bristol has excellent facilities and strong student satisfaction ratings.

University of East London (UEL): UEL offers an accredited Forensic Psychology degree (British Psychological Society-accredited) and is one of the few universities with this specialisation. Being based in London, it benefits from proximity to the Loxbridge Golden Triangle. The forensic psychology course has a silver TEF rating in student outcomes, so it’s worth considering.

I recommend checking each university's entry requirements on their websites or contacting admissions teams directly for clarification. Most are happy to answer questions.

Best of luck with your applications, and feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!
