Sixth forms vs US elite boarding school opportunity

Hi all,
I'm in y11 and aim to apply to top sixth forms, includng LAE. However, my current school offers an opportunity to go to Philipps Exeter Sumer School, one of the top US boarding schools, for free. There I can do some work on subjects I choose. If I apply and get in that means I must stay at my current school for sixth form, since our governor funds the whole trip. My current school's sixth form isn't bad, but it isn't as good as LAE, where there's more students progressing to top destinations like Oxbridge. I don't know whether its worth applying and going since I'll have to choose my current school as my sixth form. Despite this, I could also gain some skill and write abt subjects I could do there in my personal statement.

I'll be gone for 5 weeks in the summer if I do go. Additionally, my targets/predicteds at 7-9s, so I think I have a fair chance of getting a conditional offer for LAE?

Please provide some tips. I'm going to submit my application, and may/may not get an interview. Either way, I can back off if I want. Thanks!

Hey, I'm currently in Year 13 and I would definitely stay at your current school - the experience that you'll get will be invaluable for your personal statement and as part of you supercurricular activities. However, it also does depend on how disciplined you are in your studies and the sort of school you are currently at. What I mean by this is that if you are naturally disciplined when it comes to studies and don't think you necessarily need the pushing that going to a school like LAE will give you then staying at your current school is the better option. But the jump from GCSEs to A-levels is huge and I don't want to scare you or anything but it's likely that you will feel overwhelmed towards the middle of Year 12 when things start getting hard. This is normal and everyone goes through this (dw it does get better I promise) but going to a school like LAE will be invaluable during this time period as you'll be with other like-minded students and you'll have a lot of support. Nevertheless, I don't know what your current school is like in regards to the teaching is and support you're given so I can't really tell you the best course of action. Just make sure you take these factors into consideration when deciding and I'm sure you'll end up doing what's best for you. Good luck!!

Thank you so much. The deadline passed a while ago but I've chosen to apply to LAE and got an offer, but if I can't get in I'll just stay at my current sixth form (also not bad) and perhaps attend the summer school during year 12? Regardless I'm aiming to go to another summer school at Oxford this summer and I'm pretty sure LAE offers some other good supercurriculars, I aim to go to UNIQ summer schools in sixth form too. What alevels do you do?

Well done! That sounds like a great plan. I do Maths, Further Maths and Philosophy, hoping to study Maths at KCL if I get the grades! What a-levels r u planning to take?

I've picked English Lit, History, Philosophy, Psychology at LAE and am defo planning on dropping one. For my current I picked the same besides philosophy since they don't offer it. Not too sure but would love to study English lit or comparative literature at uni for undergraduate and either do a PGDL into law or keep at it until I'm a professor in English one day! Honestly law seems quite daunting so I'm planning on doing some work experience for it at sixth form so I can make my mind up better 😌
