Extra Time - ALevel

Really sorry if this is a dumb question or if it’s got a really obvious answer but I have always found myself not finishing exams entirely or when I do finish, it’ll be right at the end but it wouldn’t have been a very good answer.

My father had died right before the start of Year 11 and it has taken a serious toll on my mental health, I quickly realised that I got worse during my exams especially after my father had died and I had asked my head of year about extra time but she said it was far too late for me to be considered which is partly the reason that I don’t think I did great in my GCSE’s.

I’m in year 12 now doing 3 a levels and doing timed exams basically every week in all of my subjects I’ve realised that I still struggle but I’m not sure if it’s because of my fathers death although I don’t think so because obviously I’m still affected by it but I feel like I’ve come to terms with it if that makes sense or if it’s something else.

Who do I talk to to figure out if I am Infact eligible for extra time and if there’s even a point because I don’t want to be wasting anyone’s time if it’s obvious that I’m not supposed to have extra time.

hello,
in a website it says this "you’re dealing with medical conditions, dyslexia, recent traumas, ADHD, or similar challenges." (https://studymind.co.uk/ucas-guide/how-to-qualify-for-extra-time-in-a-levels/) so i think you are eligible for extra time try taking to your school or edexcel. i think your studies are effected by it so there is no harm in asking if your eligible.

if your not eligible don't stress out. try doing the paper from back to front. that's what i did in my business and economics IAL i also did have trouble completing my paper on time in a levels the one mark also counts .if you get a question that you dont know leave it to the end. do all the questions you know and move to the ones you have difficulties in then you can finish the paper. you can also do timed papers at your home too.

i wish you all the best and you will pass dont worry. if you need any help let me know

Speak to a SENCo or head of learning support- they can have to assessed for extra time to determine if you need it. At the start of a levels running out of time is quite common as you wont have adjusted to the types of questions you’re being asked yet so maybe mention the issue to your teachers and see what they think about the amount you’re writing- it might be for example that you write too much for one question and so run out of time for others.
