Can you get into Cambridge with these GCSEs and A levels already achieved

Is there any point in trying to apply to Cambridge for engineering if I got 8,7,6,5,5,5,5,4,3,2 at GCSEs but A*A*A* at a levels in Maths,FM and Physics.

Those are achieved a levels, taken privately at home no teachers. What do you think.

That would meet the entry requirements, so why not?

Another question is why the huge improvement?

Why Cambridge for Engineering? No Year in industry and the course is old-fashioned.

Didn't really care much about education. Didn't revise for gcses up until day before like most others. Not proud of that but oh well. Wanted to see if I really had potential to do well in hard subjects so I chose what I thought were the 3 hardest and did them at home because I only got a 5 in maths higher and 5/5 in comb sci higher so school didn't let me take there.

Are your A-level grades achieved or predicted? If the latter, predicted by...?

Achieved

Then you have a chance, especially if whoever writes your reference explains the disparity. Though as above, is Cambridge the right course for you?

As far as I know, Cambridge only cares about GCSEs in so far as they can be used as indicators for potential achievement at A-level, since most applicants will only have predicted A-level grades not achieved at the time of application. That being said, since you have already achieved excellent grades at A-level, I think it would be fair to say that Cambridge could overlook your GCSEs since they are no longer needed as evidence for your potential. So yeah, I think its worth applying. The situation could be different at Oxford where apparently more emphasis is put on GCSE grades, so I agree with the others above who say pick a different course as long as that doesn't entail switching from Cambridge to Oxford. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
