Newcastle Entry Requirements

I’m really interested in Newcastle’s English Literature and Creative Writing BA course, but I’m not sure if I have the qualifications to apply.

The entry requirements is A-Level AAB, one of which must be English Literature or English Language and Literature (combined). For A-Level, I did an English Language course (not combined) and got a grade B.

However, it also says ‘or including evidence of readiness to begin university-level study in literature, such as A-Levels in other arts and humanities subjects.’ I did A-Level Sociology (grade B) and A-Level Criminology (grade A*), both of which I believe to be in the arts and humanities field.

I also did an enrichment in English Literature and another in Creative Writing alongside my studies in college, which I got really stuck into. Additionally, I’ve done Springpod Work Experience courses in Journalism and Publishing.

How strict are Newcastle on course-specific entry requirements? Would I be wasting one of my applications if I won’t even be considered? Also, if I got A*BB in college (and a C in EPQ), would I still be considered for a course requiring AAB?

Hi @afrasaun5

At Newcastle, our offers are based on grades in three A Levels, rather than cumulative UCAS Tariff points. This means that we don’t necessarily consider A*BB as equivalent to AAB at A Level.

To check if we would consider your application, please email details of all the qualifications that you have achieved so far or are currently taking, including:

The name of the qualification (e.g. A level, BTEC, GCSE)

The subjects/units covered

Any grades/marks obtained/predicted, and the year of award

Please send this information to us via our Enquiries Form and our Undergraduate Admissions Team will be able to assess your eligibility to apply for our English Literature programmes.

Hope this helps

Elliott 🙂

Obviously everyone's experience will be different however I have just been offered a place for this course and I have D*BC so I don't think it would be a wasted application
