A levels

I need to choose my A levels soon, and I'm not sure what to pick. I would like to study international relations/international law at Uni. I am set on taking maths and German but can't decide one my 3rd. I really enjoy history but have heard it's a lot of content at alevel, is it much more than gcse? I also am considering economics but believe I will find it challenging, but I think it would go well with maths. What subjects are good for IR/IL? And will history be too difficult to manage?

I cant give a personal opinion on history as i dont take it but a levels are a lot more content than GCSEs. @Geo Lover 7 and @sdfj could you give your opinions on history (and maybe economics, sdfj) a level if possible?
I think a humanity like history or politics would probably be good for the degree subjects you’re aiming for- have you checked any entry requirements?

yes there aren't really any requirements but they recommend a large range of subjects which is why I'm not sure what to choose.

That’s understandable, make sure to pick a subject which you think you’ll enjoy and be able to excel in. Do you have any predicted grades to base this on, for example? Make sure to reflect on what you’ve enjoyed at gcse and what you find easy to study before exams etc. For subjects like politics which may be of interest but you might not have studied before, read the spec/topic list and watch some videos on YouTube giving the experiences of students who’ve taken the subjects to get an idea of what the subject is like 🙂

I think History or Politics will work well for this degree. I do History and the workload is manageable but the Essays are quite tricky so keep that in mind. Do you know what exam board the 6th Form/College you're considering does?
I do Edexcel.

That’s a strong grade- most sixth forms I think require a 5 or 6 in history if it’s taken so you’d have a good foundation if you chose it. It’s also got lots of transferable skills to subjects like sociology and politics as they have similarly styled essay questions with similar skills needed to do well (I am told anyway no personal experience cos i only do STEM subjects).

Ok thank you! Do you think that would be better than politics?

History and Sociology are sort of similar. I do both. @sdfj does OCR A-Level History so tell them about it.

That mostly depends on your interests. Maybe try and read a little about the content of politics a level and perhaps see if you can find a revision video or something for example to see if the content appeals. I did both history and politics for gcse and whilst i did marginally better in politics i found it very dull (was forced to do it) but i loved history- that’s just my experience with the two subjects but it totally depends on your personal preference ofc. Also, history and politics aren’t your only two options- if there are other subjects you’d be interested in you could research those too! I advise reading the spec overviews for all subjects you’re considering and trying to find a video about the subject on YouTube as like a review of what to expect and stuff. Do the entry requirements for degrees state a preference for any subjects at all? That could help you make your decision if you research all options and still cannot decide.

Thank you! Not really there is a wide range but they like traditional subjects and as I don't do politics or econ at gcse I think it would be best to do history as its a good essay based subject. Also, I do really enjoy history! I will most likely do it alongside german and maths. What do you think of that combo?

Sounds like a strong choice! It’ll also leave quite a lot of options open if you change your mind about what degree you wanna do (mostly in humanities).

Hi, so I’m currently doing maths fm history and economics (and chemistry).

History for A-Level is a lot more long-essay based than GCSE - no reason to scare you away from it though. Just bear that in mind. And it’s probably a slightly better suit for your degree interest, although economics would perfectly work too.

Economics is quite good fun imo - it is basically essays and much less maths than people expect. Might be slightly riskier as you probably haven’t taken the subject before. I’d probably say that an econ A-Level would carry an easier workload than history.

But up to you :dontknow: Feel free to fire away with any more questions…

Oh nice I have the option of two routes:
Stuart Britain, French revolution and Germany 1871-1990 or Ussr 1971-91, Mars China and lancastrians and Yorkists but I have no idea which to choose
