I went to 6th form for year 12 and moved to a college for year 13. Currently in year 13. You have to be really reflective and honest to yourself on what kind of person you are as each have their own pros and cons. If you know you don’t do work at home then 6th form is better for you. If you are very independent then college. Pro of sixth form is that as it only consists of around 100 students in each year so you get alot of assistance and personal attention/help. A con is that you’re in school from 8-3 typically which some people find draining and can also mean that you’ll struggle to juggle a job if you choose to do one alongside your studies. A pro of college is that you are only expected to be present for your lessons, this means you can have a job on the side (however i wouldn’t recommend if you don’t need one as a levels are difficult as is). A con is that you must be very independent, as there is little to none help as the college consists of up to 1000 students doing a levels at the same time. You wont really get close to your teachers and you need to do revision constantly to keep on top of your studies. Another difference i noticed is that in 6th form they tend to do exams after each topic, allowing you to focus fully on each topic and consolidating your understanding before movimg onto the next topic. In college they tend to teach multiple topics back to back (expecting you to revise them throughout) and will then give you an exam on multiple topics/ even a whole module. I’m a medical/ dental applicant and in my opinion, if you are planning to persue a career in STEM, with subjects such as maths, science, or even social sciences like psychology i would recommend to go to a 6th form. If you plan on doing something more creative or social like crim, arts, etc. then college will be better for you as you don’t really need help and will benefit from not being at school all the time. I personally prefer 6th form as i felt i was seen more, and had learnt better as i tend to not work at home even if i say i will. I do find it harder now but i need to just get on with it and push through. You just have to be completley honest with yourself and do what will be best for you. Its only 2 years and it will fly by so quickly! Best of luck for whatever you choose to do in the future ❤️

I also forgot to mention that it does depend on your gcse grades also, 6th form tend to have high entrance grades such as a 6 in the subject u want to do and a minimum of 5 in English. College is a bit more lenient but dont let that stop you. Just make sure to check that you have the correct grades with the school, and if you dont it wont hurt to ask if they can acommodate for you still, the worst they can say is no. I initially took maths and was told my grade was a little lower than expected (got a 6) and that i would find it hard. I explained that it is something i am interested in and need for my career path and they agreed to let me on as a ‘taster’. First week in i hated it and switched to psychology so dont be afraid to negotiate, at the end of the day this is for your future.
