Can you pick your roommate?? And can it be opposite gender? Like a friend you already know?

In most university accomodation in the UK, you don't have a roommate - but have a room to yourself. Have you checked that the universities to which you're applying offer shared rooms?

I’m hoping to go to Edinburgh university, I’ll have a look on their website!!

By roommate, do you mean flatmates? I've had a quick search and Edinburgh say (summarised)

'We do not place friends within the same flat. We can make a note on your record to be placed in the same building as your friend but there are no guarantees.
However, if you wish to share a twin room with a friend, you’ll both be asked to list one another’s name on your application form and we’ll be more than happy to try and facilitate this request.'

Some other universities allow friends to live in the same flat though, I know one of my choices does.

Hi,

When it comes to picking your roommate at UK universities, the options can vary depending on the accommodation policy of the specific institution. Most universities assign roommates randomly or based on preferences (e.g., single gender) indicated during the application process. However, some universities allow you to request to live with a specific person if both of you are applying to the same accommodation and make the request together.

It is best if you get in touch to the accommodation team and voice these concerns for a better response.

Best wishes,

Hello,

If the property allows it, many accommodations will allow you to place a request to be in the same room as a friend or another person applying for accommodation. While there’ll never be any guarantees for whether or not you’ll be in the same room together, it’s still worth a shot. If you’d like to browse through properties that may allow you to do this, you can do so through online website.
