Loughborough University

Hi, I'm thinking of applying to Loughborough for Accounting and Finance and was wondering what the Muslim population is like as I plan to live in accommodation? I'm from brum so are surrounded by Muslims and so want to go somewhere like that. Btw I am Muslim myself so I want a familiar feeling, ig a sense of security, not saying I feel unsafe around other religions, just that I'd prefer a familiar feeling of home. It was between Loughborough and Nottingham and ik Nottingham has a larger diverse population but I think I have a higher chance of getting into Loughborough rather than Nottingham based on my predictions. Thanks.

Hi there,

It’s great that you’re thinking ahead and considering where you’ll feel most comfortable. Both Loughborough and Nottingham are excellent universities, and here are a few things to keep in mind:

1 Loughborough While Loughborough is a bit smaller and less diverse than cities like Nottingham or Birmingham, the university is welcoming and supportive. There is a Loughborough Islamic Society (ISoc) that organises events, prayer spaces, and a strong Muslim community on campus. It’s worth checking out their social media or website to see what’s on offer.

2 Nottingham Nottingham, as you mentioned, has a larger and more diverse population. It’s a vibrant city with a significant Muslim community, mosques, halal food options, and active student societies like University of Nottingham ISoc and Nottingham Trent ISoc. If diversity and community are key priorities, Nottingham may provide that familiar home-like feeling you’re looking for.

3 Consider What Feels Right If you feel Loughborough gives you a better chance of getting in, don’t worry too much. You can still build connections and a sense of community once you’re there joining societies and meeting other students will help a lot.

4 Visit Both Campuses If possible, attending open days or virtual tours can give you a clearer idea of the environment and how you might feel in each place. Sometimes being there in person makes all the difference.

Ultimately, you’ll be able to find a community wherever you go universities are incredibly diverse, and societies like ISocs are always welcoming. It’s about what feels right for you academically and socially.
Best of luck with your decision!

Hey,
I've also applied to Loughborough this year as a Muslim girl from London - I was looking for the same type of community feel and after going to an open day I'd deffo say that it's great! I was not expecting diversity at all but I was proved wrong after seeing Muslim families walking around. It's not going to be as diverse as Birmingham and London but there is definitely a bit of a community over there and I don't see myself feeling like the odd one out in any way. I think the fact that Leicester and Nottingham are close by is what helps. In terms of accommodation, from talking to people that go there, they try and take into consideration religious/personal preference when matching people. There's also a lot of private accommodation that isn't too pricey or loud if that's what you're tryna go for. Overall It's my top choice rn cause it ticked all my boxes but I hope this helped! Good luckkkkk

I’ve just finished my first year at Lboro and I am also from Brum. Lboro uni has a very wide international community, so I wouldn’t worry too much. Like said above, there is an Islamic Society at the university that would definitely help to bring that sense of familiarity and community you’re looking for.

Loughborough is a small town compared to Birmingham, but the university itself is filled with culture… I definitely enjoy the change of pace having lived in Brum all my life, Loughborough town does feel safe so there is nothing to be worried about.
