Bangor Accommodation help! :)

Hi I was wondering if anyone could weigh in on this! I’m hoping to go to Bangor sept 2025 and am wondering what room option I should pick. From what I’ve looked at fridd is the village I’m going for but I’ve seen no one debate over whether the “new” rooms are better than the older ones? What are the major differences if there are any? Thankyou!

Hiya! I went to a open day and it was explained to me. ultimately there isn't a huuuuuuuuuuge difference. I am also going to bangor 2025 studying zoology

Ffriddoedd is a LOT bigger, often loud and has a bar. (this doesn't mean it won't be quiet but it will be louder than st marys). the accommodation options are also limited. Quite a lot of the facilities are in St Marys however both have adequate to exist and plod along with life.

St Marys is up a hill (REALLY steep) but is quite quiet and peaceful. Lots of different options for accommodation and it is a lot smaller. Tends to be less people around as out of town. (only 5-10 mins walk)

There isn't really a difference in terms of quality, internet is good at both of them, beds are same, rooms are same for same price.. just a bit more variety at St Marys.

cheers

On the rooms aswell is there difference between the “modern” ones in fridd and the “classic” ones cause the price difference seems rather major?

They're both adequate to live in

I am a first year at Bangor (and will be returning to halls next year too). I live in Ffridd and recommend it over St Mary's highly. Better socially, better on site gym. I live in the "newer" accommodation. There are pros and cons to the older and newer builds. Pros for older builds: Cheaper, the kitchen design in most of them offer slightly more counter space.
Pros for newer builds: The showers are not wet rooms! For me I couldn't stand having water leaking out onto the bathroom floor. Sofa's in kitchen (if you care about that). More space in the classic rooms.
Even though the price is going up next year I've chosen the newer room again because having decent desk space is a priority for me since I like doing art.
Feel free to ask me any questions. Also, apologies if this answer is too late.

Answer is right on time, actually i’ve chosen Bangor as my firm now and I am waiting for the email about accommodation. I’m just deliberating whether the two grand a year difference between you and Old is really worth it. I honestly think I can make any space work socially if the people are good I think I’m going to go for the older style as I can put that two grand towards making nicer food. The only thing I would ask is I’ve seen in photos about the classic rooms. The wolves are very white and almost like painted over bricks and I think I will find that quite cold. Where is the new seem to have more cream coloured more traditional drywall and I value a cozy room very much so is it very noticeable or Will covering and posters to the job?

If you put posters up you must use something which won't leave marks otherwise you'll have to pay money to get it fixed.
The old style in Ffridd is the same socially as the newer ones (it's the villages where the social difference is). Also, I know so many people who regret living in St Mary's. I've struggled to be able to get a job here so far so my budget is tight but doable for cooking nutritious meals. Also, if you're doing anything ocean sciences related definitely go to Ffridd. If you've not already check the online the virtual viewer of old and new style ffrid places. Unfortunately because the price is going up next year I'll be on an even tighter budget but there are some things about the old style I just couldn't compromise on. If you really really can't afford it then just go for the cheaper ones because the main difference (apart from price) is literally just room space and how the showers are wetrooms.

I was in Fridd for my first year and it was absolutely great. The Student Union just around the corner as was the launderette . Rooms not huge but not small. Good atmosphere if you manage to make friends although it can be tough if you're not very sociable. Walking distance depends but about 10 mins from main building and 10 mins to the High Street in the centre. However you don't need to go into town, Morrisons 5 mins walk and small shops nearby plus some really good pubs etc.
Hope that helps.

Sorry if this is a little late, but Im currently live in st marys and will be next year too. Ffrid is much larger and the social aspect is greater i will 100% agree on that due to classic Bar Uno. The 'New' rooms are large in space, as the 'older' rooms have a smaller desk and bathroom, of just being a wet room. While St marys has a proper working shower no problems since i have been here, but its really up to what you fancy and the budget you are fine with. Sorry again for so late but hope this somewhat helps.

I think you also forgot to mention that massive bloody hill you have to walk up 🤣 I was at fridd in first year but use to always see people with their shopping going up that hill, it very funny cause I guarantee u that they didn’t know about that hill if they didn’t go to an open day 🤣

Hey! I was wondering if it is typical for students of all years to live on campus, or if people typically move out into the town? I’ll be coming for a 1 year masters and am not sure what the done thing is?

Hi ediepatey,

First of all, congrats on the master’s 🎓 can’t wait to welcome you here! 🎉

Everyone's preferences and circumstances are different, so it’s hard to give one typical answer, but I can definitely share a few examples to give you an idea of what some students do.

Most undergraduate students live in university halls during their first year 🏫 it's part of our accommodation guarantee, and it really helps with settling in, meeting people, and finding your way around. In later years, many of them move into shared houses with friends 🏠, though a lot choose to stay in halls if they prefer that setup or for convenience.

When it comes to postgraduates, especially those coming to Bangor for the first time, many find it easier to settle in by living in university accommodation 🛏️. It guarantees you a place to stay, includes all your bills (which makes budgeting simpler 💡), and gives you access to things like free gym membership 🏋️ and Campus Life activities 🎭 great for meeting other students.

Because Bangor is a small, walkable town 🚶*♂️🚶*♀️, even if some of your new friends end up in private housing (they might have done their undergraduate here as well), you’re still likely to be close by. You won't feel isolated, even if you're not all living in the same building.

A few key things to know about guaranteed accommodation for postgraduates:
We guarantee university accommodation to new postgraduate applicants who:

Are applying for a full-time course starting in September 📅

Will be based at our Bangor campus 📍

Have achieved unconditional status before 7th August

Apply for a place in halls by 7th August 🗓️

Postgraduate accommodation is mainly single-occupancy, and options include en-suite rooms, studios, and townhouses 🛋️. If you apply before the deadline, you’ll have the chance to choose your preferred room, subject to availability.

Hope this helps, and feel free to reach out if you’ve got more questions! 😊

Ffi 🙂
