Regretting my subjects

Hey! I am in year 12 and i have chosen History, Economics and Psychology. i enjoy them all a lot but i have been looking at university choices and there aren’t any pathways for me except for law which is really competitive. if i would want to do economics it is required for me to do maths and if i want to do psychology (in the fields that i want to study) biology is required. I feel like my subjects don’t show my maximum potential, especially since i don’t have any stem subjects. My parents told me to do what i’m best at and it doesn’t matter what subjects that i do as long as i get high grades but i feel like i can’t do anything. i’m debating on doing a fourth subject, either biology or maths. i’m leaning more towards bio but i will do maths if i have to. However that depends on if my school lets me since we have covered quite a bit already. i would love to hear any advice and any suggestions for me as i am kinda losing motivation because of this. Thank you.

If you either want to do maths or biology, I'd rather you do it in a gap year because I do think even if you switch or pick subjects it is quite too late to learn through and catch up. It is possible if you spend more time on this than the others but it will lead on to affect your other subjects. So it is better if you complete all of the A-levels your currently doing first then come back to learning maths or biology in a gap year.

Hi @crazedambition

I recommend you discuss with your sixth form/college as it is quite late in the year to pick up a subject so it might be worth discussing it, as you would have missed a fair bit of content and also what it is you would have missed to see if you would be able to catch up.

I recommend that you choose the subject based on what field you want to go into. So, ideally make a decision between Economics or Psychology. I'm not sure which psychology courses in particular you are considering. Many Psychology courses do accept maths or psychology. So, it might be maths would be the better option as this would keep your options the broadest. With majority of psychology courses, you would be able to specialise in what area of psychology you prefer later on in the degree.

I studied Biology, Geography and Maths at A level and currently study Philosophy, Politics and Economics at degree. With Economics, there is alot of maths so if this was a degree you are considering you should enjoy maths. And there are universities who prefer a student having Further Maths also to get in.

I personally found Biology and Maths A level of equal difficulty. Biology is very strict on the wording of the mark scheme. So, I found the papers quite hard. However, I found the content easier to understand - once you understood it, it was more of a case of memorising and applying it. Whereas, Maths has not got much memorisation but more about solving the questions, which can also be challenging.

It might be worth looking at the specifications online for the relevant exam board to help make your decision.

Hope this helps,

There’s quite a lot of humanities based degrees which dont require specific subjects. Maybe have a bit of a browse on uniguide and see if anything appeals. If you’re excelling and enjoying these subjects then hopefully there will be something you’ll want to pursue! Just a sidenote, don’t trust the bit on uniguide where it says what subjects are required (scroll down and check specific examples from unis) because theyre often inaccurate (especially for some STEM options). There are I think options in psychology if you only take psych but it might be more of the Ba degrees than BSc- still worth checking though 🙂
