Really lonely don't have anyone I feel I can talk to. Cry everyday now

Good evening

Firstly, well done for reaching out, it's a brave thing to admit you are feeling lonely. I know it might not seem like it, but you won't be the only student feeling like this. Most people feel lonely at some point in their lives this is particularly common in students at some point during their degrees.

Can I ask if you are in the first year?

I ask because this can be the most fun, but hardest year especially if you have moved away for the first time. It is a huge thing going to university being in a new environment, moving out for the first time, living with new people in an unfamiliar place, and studying a new course, so you should be proud of yourself! This is a Huge achievement just to go to university!

Have you been in touch with your student support services?

If not it is worth doing so as they will be experienced in supporting students experiencing loneliness. In addition, it is worth speaking to your GP about how you are feeling as they will be used to supporting people feeling similar.

Have you managed to make many friends at university?

If so, you could reach out to them, and see if anyone fancies a cuppa and even if you don't feel comfortable chatting about how you feel this might be a nice distraction. But if you do feel able to chat about it then go for it, often you will find friends have had periods of being lonely too.

If you still want to make new friends then why not offer to give someone you'd like to get to know in your accommodation or on your course a hand with something so you have a good excuse to start chatting to them?

Another great way to meet like-minded people is to join a society! At my university, we have a vast array of societies from the usual football and rugby societies, to the Tabletop Board Games, to the Taylor Swift, and Racing Car Society, there is something for everyone. It is easier to start up conversations in society because you know most people who have joined because they want to meet people with common interests, so they will be very grateful to you for breaking the ice for them! Most people are as keen as you are to find friends they connect with and can chat with honestly.

I hope this helps a little. Best of luck, look after yourself, and well done for reaching out!
