Is UoR a good uni?

I got an offer at the university of Reading and made it my firm choice after getting rejected from my #1 choice (UoB).

I’ve read a lot of reviews saying it’s a good place to study and the campus looks cool from what I’ve seen online but since I missed the opportunity to visit the uni and the town it’s in I can’t tell if it’s worth it or not.

I want to study Bsc environmental science but since I haven’t visited the uni I have no idea if the facilities they provide are up to standard or if it actually lives up to its reputation LOL 😭

Hey sorry to hear you got rejected from UoB, the University of Reading is a very good university and considered one of the most prestigious outside of the Russell Group and is apart of the Sutton 30 which is a group of the 30 most selective unis in the UK and used to be apart of the old 1994 group which unis like Durham and LSE were apart of. Reading itself is a large town and as I used to live there I can tell you it has everything you’d need and the nightlife isn’t too bad from what I’ve heard. I study history so I have no idea how the university is for environmental science but everybody I know who went to Reading loved it there and I think if you choose to go there you’ll enjoy it too.

My brother goes to Reading, he likes it there. He says theres good nightlife there, and its easy to get to London as well. When I went to visit him the campus looked really nice too, lots of green space .

In terms of the course itself, he doesn't do the same course as you so I can't tell you much about that. Have you checked if there are any offer holder days/open days you could attend in the new year?

Good evening @liy_a_xo,

It's great to hear you are considering the University of Reading. I am currently a second-year BSc Ecology and Wildlife student.

I have had a very positive experience at the University of Reading. However, every student has different standards, so knowing what you wish for in a university is very important.

A great way to see the university is by using the Virtual Tours webpage, where you can look at every aspect of the campus. Similarly, you can look at your subject-specific facilities for Environmental Sciences, which will show you where you will be learning if you choose to join the university. All of the facilities are kept very clean, as they have cleaners in every building in the mornings, ensuring everything is always kept to a high standard.

Additionally, the university offers a range of accommodation options, which are kept to a high standard, with many options for students to choose from.

Additionally, there are many student blogs which highlight their opinions on the university facilities, such as UoR Secret Garden, Making the Most of the Library, and Making the Most out of the Careers Service.

Similarly, you can find blogs about the local town, exploring the Reading town centre, five best day trips, and Natural spots in Reading.

I hope this helps. I have also provided a bit more information about the facilities at the University of Reading.

If you have any questions please let us know.

All the best
Ella

This comes mostly from the perspective of a Reading native, not attending UoR (but I am planning to so for my postgrad).

I have always heard that UoR is only really good for a few subjects - of which include Meteorology, Environmental Science, Zoology, Archaeology, Business, English and Film - of which I am not sure how valid these claims are.

The campus is really nice, very green and nice to walk around. Local area is alright - the town is good enough really - good spread of shops and resturants. I am not really one for nightlife - but we have 2 spoons, a few night clubs and some good pubs. I haven't been out clubbing since before the pandemic, so I can't tell you how it is nowadays.

Bus service is pretty good across the board - can get to pretty much anywhere in Reading and the surrounding areas relatively affordably. Trains are also pretty good.

I would say its generally a pretty safe area - obviously we have some youths that are not the best behaved - but thats the same as anywhere really.
