Oxford medicine

I’m in yr 12 and predicted all a*s in maths bio chem and an a in my epq. I have yet to sit the Ucat but my mock scores are around 3000 b1 and I’m hoping for 3200. My GCSE’s are quite weak I have a* a* a* a a a a b b c. I resat my English language gcse and received a grade 7 or Oxford equivalent A. However my b b c in photography, computer science and Spanish respectively don’t look so good. If I achieved the Ucat score and wrote a great personal statement. Will I even get an interview?

You sound like you have a chance. How come you list your GCSEs in "a*..." instead of "9-1" grading?

Admissions test score counts for a lot though, so do well in that and make sure you are excelling in your A level work. Keep trying hard and an interview wouldn't be an impossibility. Of course, not getting an interview is also possible so make sure have backup plans.

you definitely sound like a prime candidate, but youre only in year 12 right? youve already done enough UCAT practices to get a prediction? do you think i should be practicing too?

I got 9887777665 but I believe Oxford use the alphabet grading system when comparing GCSEs, correct me if I am wrong.

yes, I think it is crucial but obviously put obtaining the 3 a*s first.

To be honest no.Oxford Medicine are looking for 10 grade 9/8 and although some contextualisation goes on you should concentrate on other medical schools.

I see, thank you for your feedback. Is there anything I could do to get a chance? I do many extracurricular and supercurricular activities like volunteering at my local hospital for 2 years now and participating in olympiads and the UKMT. I'm part of my school's cheerleading team and we have won 2 competitions. Sorry if I am spilling my personal statement on you. But if you're saying I don't have a chance at getting into Oxford because of my poor GCSEs what universities would you say I have a chance at?

I would post this on the main medical thread. They are the experts at playing to your strengths.I hope you understand I am being cruel to be kind. There are many good med schools in the Uk but you have to be realistic and strategic with your
choices.
@MedMama could you help here?

please get advice from school/ sixth form first
scan all medicine threads over the holidays and continue doing so
most of all, concentrate on A levels and actual UCAT as if you smash 💥
it by actually achieving over > 3000 and band 1 or 2, then you can apply pretty much anywhere provided you’ve met their minimum requirements which means checking websites

your school will advise on other vital points such as whether your application has contextual factors once you apply

so *please don’t ask follow up questions here on TSR now* until you have done a lot more reading around this and scan the ‘which medicine school should I apply to’ thread in particular
you are a long way yet from selecting choices and when the time comes will need to list actual GCSE numbers, unless you live somewhere using letters instead… but not now
get reading, researching, look into work experience this summer
and sit your actual UCAT when time comes
then, you’ll do brilliantly

The medical thread is very busy right now helping this years applicants but if you study the forum you will pick up a lot of ideas about where you might apply to.Unfortunstely Oxford do give a lot of weight to gcse"s.

Do you mean your target grades are A*? It's far too early for predictions to be made - you haven't overed A* material in Maths for example.

Your GCSEs are weak for Oxford unless you are in a low-performing school.

Is 9 grade 8/9 fine as that is how many my school let me take. I also have a contextual element as most people in my school don’t pass English and math

Hi,
I am currently in year 22 and I am planning to apply to Oxford for medicine. I got 99999999888 (8s were in English language, English literature and Spanish) and I was wondering if my GCSE grades are good enough to consider applying since I got 3 8s and not all 9s.
I am also only taking 3 A levels in maths, biology and chemistry. In terms of volunteering/ work experience, I help out at my old primary school with SATs preparation, I help out at year 7 science club, I do science mentoring at school, I tutor GCSE chemistry and I am doing a teaching programme at school where you develop skills to become a teacher. I am also part of the Kucy Cavendish AAP scheme. I have done 1 day of work experience with a paediatrian at a hospital.
Is there anything else I would need to consider to make my application as competitive as possible to study medicine at Oxford?

the ucat is not going to be out of 2700 so how come you’re practising for it now? you may as well start in may june time and you don’t need to do abstract reasoning. you getting 3000 isn’t representative
