Am I right for Head girl?

I want to go for head girl since I know I will regret not going for the role. However,I am unsure whether I fit the standards.I am chatty, some teachers don’t like me and the headteacher doesn’t know me at all - neither any of the SLT(senior leadership team).I have good attributes too like being a loud speaker, communicating well and I am a good student overall(I’ve participated in many events too).I feel like people look down on me because of my silly jokes and my bright personality. They think I’m not capable of being serious and that concerns me since getting head girl is getting people too vote for you - a popularity contest basically. When I say I want to be head girl,I judge myself against one of the candidates that has done similar things to me and it seems she knows more teachers and is liked by them. Most people don’t look down on her.As she is my competition,I am not sure whether or not I will have a chance against her.(she’s like the main candidate)So do you think I should still go for it or leave it?

Give it a go, what the worst they could do? Say no? Better than not trying at all.

Hi @Zahra-yk,

Back when I was in Upper Sixth I was Head Boy, but just like you I had so many doubts before applying because it felt like I wasn't good enough, or up to par in comparison with the other candidates. Though I was familiar and known amongst teachers and staff, the other candidates were a lot more outgoing and established better rapport compared to me. I was performing well in my subjects, but then again I wasn't top of the class or overall consistent. I had friends and was friendly with all my peers, but still, I wasn't the extremely 'popular' kid. All in all, you will always compare yourself with the other candidates, and some of them may shine in certain aspects compared to you. But that doesn't undermine your capabilities entirely. Having the initiative to apply for Head Girl already says so much about you and what you're capable of.

I suggest you give it a shot anyways, you'll learn a lot becoming head girl and if you don't happen to get the role- you'll still learn a lot during the application process.

Hope this helps,
Danish
