Help on a Graphic Design Uni

I’ve got some offers back from my chosen unis but I am now having second thoughts on which is going to be the best for me.
I have offers for Birmingham City, Northumbria, Leeds Art and York St John and was wondering if anyone had any advice as I'm quite anxious about it all!

Hi @dais05_

Congratulations on getting some offers!
I would recommend trying to do as much research as possible about the universities so you can decide which is best for you. You can access BCU's virutal open day on this link https://bit.ly/3NGd63P to help you find out more about BCU.

Let me know if you have any specific questions about BCU.

Hi there @dais05_ , If you have already been to Open Days, I would suggest reaching out to past graphic design students on socials and ask about their experience! This feedback really helped me make my choice when applying to university🤗 Just some factors to consider would be Location and Facilities. Would you be commuting or staying within campus? What are some of the differences with facilities or teaching style between these unis? I hope this helps 🙂

Hi there!

My name is Kiera. I'm a third-year student at York St. John. I take Psychology, so unfortunately, I can't advise on the specifics of the Graphic Design course, but I can advise on the university more generally!

In general, I'd recommend going to offer holder days/ decision days for all of the universities you have received offers from. You'll get some more information about these days in the new year, but briefly, they're like open days, but more tailored. At the YSJ decision days, you'll be offered sessions to meet the academics on your chosen course, get to know more about the course, the content, and how it is assessed, and you'll meet others starting in September while you do so! I really recommend going to as many decision days as you are able to. I found that going to decision days helped me to figure out where I felt the most happy, at home, and safe🤗

If you have any specific questions about YSJ, let me know and I'll do my best to help!

Hi 😀,

It’s great to hear you want to study BA (Hons) Graphic Design. Throughout the course, you will work individually and collaboratively to produce extraordinary work in a modern studio environment. We offer all our students a unique and engaging learning environment.

Leeds is a great city to study in with a thriving arts community. There’s always something different to do so you are guaranteed an excellent social life. Our campus is based next to the city centre, so you have a range of great cafes, shops, green spaces and galleries at your doorstep. The Sunday Times has recently named it as the best place to live in the north. I have enclosed a link below with some of our must-visit places :

You can learn more about the course and studying at the university on our online open day. You can register on the link below. Alternatively, you will have been sent some information about our upcoming offer holder days. We recommend you attend one of them as they are a great way to chat with current students and staff about any questions you may have.

You can also chat with one of our current BA (Hons) Graphic Design students if you have any questions about the course or studying in Leeds.

If you have any more questions please let me know. 😎
They're all good options. I've made some brief comments below. Really, it depends where you want to live... three are in large student-friendly cities, but York is a much smaller/nicer/quieter.

Birmingham City: doing really good things at the moment, great staff. Relatively commercial in outlook.
Northumbria: has been a really well regarded course for decades. Relatively commercial in outlook.
Leeds Art: a big course but well run. Less commercial in outlook.
York St John: well run, does well in league tables but not sure about it's focus or quality of student work.

You won't go wrong, so don't rush into a decision - attend open days, visit the cities themselves, look at examples of student work (and don't necessarily trust what student reps on here say, they're paid to say good things).

Hi there! I'm Charlotte a graphic design student from Norwich Uni Arts.
My top tip would be to visit the unis if possible as this is a great way to get a feel for the campus and meet current students and tutors. Also, there's a platform called UniBuddy which is a great way to ask any questions you may have to student ambassadors from various unis.

It can be a very daunting time, but I'm happy to answer any questions that you may have - and good luck choosing a uni! 🙂
