Life as a University of Chester Business student

Hi, my name is Halle, and I am a second-year student studying International Business Management with a year abroad. I wanted to share a bit about what a typical day is like for me. Chester Business School has recently been named Business School of the Year at the Times Higher Education Awards 2024, so it's an exciting time to be part of the school!

My day usually starts at 7:30am when I get up and get ready for the day by packing my bag (hoping that I remembered to charge my laptop!) Then I walk to Chester Business School which is located on the Queen’s Park campus. It’s around a 20-minute walk from where I live. I find that the walk helps me to start my day and wake me up so that I am ready for lectures when I arrive.

The first thing I do when I arrive at Chester Business School is get a hot drink from either Starbucks or the hot drink machine, especially on the colder days. After this I attend my lectures where I’ll take notes, learn about my assignment or have class/group discussions about different areas that affect business. During the break between lectures, I grab a snack and sit and talk to friends.

Once all my classes are done for the day, I walk back through Chester city centre. Back at home I get ready to go to the gym with my friends where we spend most of our time talking to other people and the workers instead of doing exercise! After the gym some of my housemates and I cook food together and rate our plates! We then sit together and watch TV for the rest of the evening.

I also wanted to share 3 ways that my course and department are preparing me for the future!

1.During one of the modules in my first year I learned how to write a graduate level CV. This was helpful as I now have a CV that I can update throughout my degree, and this means that I will be in a position to apply for jobs as soon as I graduate.

2.Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) meetings allow me to ask questions about the course and anything else related to business. For example, I recently booked a meeting with my PAT because I had some questions about a work event that I was attending. I found this useful because my PAT had attended many similar events in the past and helped me to feel confident about it.

3.My second year includes a work-based learning module, where my academic department have helped me to secure a work placement. This is important for my future as it will allow me to get experience in an area that I am interested in and get a feel for what type of job I’d like in the future.
