I’m thinking of applying to Durham uni but I worry that there’s no diversity. What colleges have the best diversity as I’m worried.
Hiya,
I went through the same experience when I was first applying to Durham but once I got here, I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity. Is it the most diverse university in the UK? No but its still quite diverse for being a very small city, and that is largely due to the students. There are so many societies/groups that make Durham quite diverse as well as the colleges, while there is no specific college at Durham that is more diverse the hill colleges (particularly John Snow/South) tend to be quite popular colleges if you prefer a less traditional experience at Durham. What really helped me feel less nervous was actually visiting Durham and seeing it for myself whether for an Open day or post offer day, you can find more info about that here Visit us - Durham University. Also, online resources like student blogs, social media content, etc can really help shed light on the Durham experience and everything Durham has to offer, I highly recommend checking out The Durham Student for that sort of information. 🙂
I've been at Durham for 3 years now and can say that I've never had an issue personally, still my experience is mine alone and may not reflect other peoples. If you have any questions/need any advice on navigating Durham has a WOC, I'm more than happy to help!

The truth is there will be a lot of closet racists at any university in the UK, or any other university across the globe where Caucasian students form the majority of the student population. Durham has traditionally been seen as a safe haven for Caucasian students to gravitate towards, and so you may come across more racism there than many other universities. But regardless of where you go, the problem will still be there. If you come across any concrete racism or discrimination, make a note of it, and if necessary, report it to the university. Racism and discrimination doesn't have to be a choice, and the perpetrators involved should be chased after with as much factual detail as possible. As students become more aware of the consequences of their actions, they will most likely resort to more subtle discrimination, by avoiding you. There isn't much a university can do about that, because you can't force anyone to be your friend, as long as they cooperate in class for projects and presentations etc.
Having said all that, even if there will always be a lot of closet racists at uni, and in the wider society, most students will not be among them.
