2nd year student expelled for first time plagiarism?

I am currently in my second year of study and am looking to change my course. however, around this same time I have been incredibly stressed and upset on my current course as I deeply misunderstood the course before taking it.

I aim to switch courses by the end of this year then work in my city until september when i start my new course.

the Issue that i want advice on is that i am concerned that my stupidity and stress that caused me to loosely follow a groupmates work has placed me under investigation from the university. my main concern is the likelihood of being expelled for this as I am keen on changing courses as soon as i can. (I should clarify that the course I want to do is almost solely available at my current university).

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. i have already began talks with the university about changing courses and will be contacting SFE as soon as an outcome has been decided.

Sorry to hear of the stress you are facing, that must be really tough. I promise though this will be resolved and you will move on from this.

But rest assured this is very very likely not going to result in immediate expulsion. Having said that Unis take plagiarism/cheating very seriously so some potential results could be one of a number of things e.g. academic probation, but by the sounds of it most likely scenario will be they give you a grade penalty/a failing grade or they fail you for the module so brings your overall degree result down. It may be they give you a grade penalty and give you the option of a capped retake later on, but depends on the severity of the situation.

If this is your first time doing this hopefully they will go easier on you, it's more so if you are a repeatedly doing this you would be expelled pretty quickly (or if you plagiarised/cheated for a big piece of coursework with a significant weighing on your overall uni mark).

Of course I'm sure goes without saying but try to avoid any cheating/plagiarism in the future, partly just hinders learning but also because it will be recorded and marked on your uni record so if it were to happen again you would have a much higher chance of getting expelled.

Hope the outcome is okay and they aren't too harsh on you!! Good luck!

It depends on what course you are studying. When I did my nursing many years ago, turn it in had just been introduced, a classmate plagiarised and was expelled completely from the course. Unfortunately with professional courses that are bound by code of conduct, any acts that raise questions about your integrity can lead to very serious consequences. Try to contact Occupational health services at university, you will be surprised how much assistance they can give with stress and other related issues.
Wish you all the best

Hi there,
Thank you for sharing your situation. First, it’s great that you’ve started discussions about changing courses and are being proactive. Regarding the investigation, honesty is key—explain your situation to the university, including the stress and misunderstanding about your current course. Universities often consider mitigating circumstances, so providing context can help.
Focus on demonstrating your commitment to academic integrity and your future goals, including how the new course aligns with your aspirations. Stay engaged with your university’s student support services—they’re there to guide you.
Keep calm, take things step by step, and don’t lose hope. Wishing you the best!

Thanks & Regards,
Coventry University Student Ambassador

I feel i should update properly and say that all went well during my interview. i was honest with what i did and explained that i did it due to stress and unhappiness on the course. i was given a written warning and a 0 on the assignment. I’m taking a break from study until september where i will be transferring onto a course im more passionate about. if anyone is ever reading this and truly is unhappy on their course i would advise you to talk to your uni representatives about it. even as a second year they were happy to assist me in transferring and sorting out fees with SFE. If you truly want to change course its worth investigating what can be done as the relief and excitement that I feel is a lot better than the dread and stress that i felt before.

thank you so much for all the kind words and advice.
