Received home fee status from a UK University, am I eligible for a student loan?

Hello there

I am a UK citizen, I have been living in Canada for the past 6 years due to my fathers temporary work which ends in June 2025 at which point we will move back to the UK. I have applied to several universities with the necessary evidence to support home fee status and have received home fee status offers from all of them.

Because I have received home fee status offers from the UK universities, does this mean that I am automatically eligible to receive a loan from 'Student Finance England'? For example I don't need to go through the whole home fee approval process again. I noticed in the Student Finance England' application that it asked me in 255 words to explain my absence from the UK over the last 3 years? What should I put in this field?

Also when can I apply for a student loan, it seems they are only accepting applications for 2024/2025?

And finally, when do I need to accept my offers from the UK universities by?

Many thanks
Bob

Sorry also, i don't have a NI card yet. I will apply for one when I return to the UK in June 2025, is this required for a successful application?

Hi there,

Whether you're eligible for home fees or not doesn't make you eligible for Student Finance. Applications for 25/26 academic year are not yet open. These normally open Feb/March time. You would submit an application and then need to send your evidence to confirm your time outside the UK was temporary. Once reviewed the team will let you know if it's been accepted or not. I would suggest applying as soon as applications open as they can take 6-8 weeks to process and you may be asked for further evidence due to the time outside the UK.

Keep checking our website for applications going live.

Regarding national insurance number, once your application is approved we will send your details to The Department For Works and Pensions (DWP) who will check if you have one. If they can't find one they will then contact you by sms/letter to invite you for an appointment to get one.

Thanks,
Claire

Hi Claire
Thanks for the response. So it seems I would need to go through the same process as with the home fee assessment with the UK universities.

Can this assessment be started earlier than Feb/March? I have all of my evidence ready.

Can you advise on where my evidence would need to be uploaded to on the portal, there is only a form field available. Is there further official guidance on this, many thanks.

You can't apply for finance with us for a 25/26 course as the applications aren't open.
If you wish to apply for national insurance number sooner then you would need to look into this yourself and contact DWP.

Thanks,
Claire

Hello, would it be worth applying for the loan for the 2024/2025 start to see if I am eligible? Would that impact my 2025/2026 application?

If your course doesn't start till 25/26 you can't apply on another academic year's application.

Thanks,
Claire

ok, thanks. Does student finance have a document that describes the evidence requirements.
Hi there,

The type of evidence we would request would be your dads temporary work visas/work permits or temporary work contracts. We can also accept evidence that you kept links to the UK such as bank statements or utility bills that had to be paid.

Thanks, Drew
