Career guidance- law to radiography

Hi everyone, I’m currently in a tough situation and could really use some guidance. I used to be passionate about pursuing medicine, but I became very ill, which caused me to miss out on achieving the grades I aimed for.
GCSE Grades:

Food Preparation and Nutrition: 7

English Literature: 7

History: 6

Mathematics: 6

English Language: 6

Business, Religious Studies, Geography, Biology, Chemistry, Physics: 5

Recently, I discovered diagnostic radiography and radiology, and I’m deeply intrigued by these fields. I’m currently studying BTEC Health and Social Care (predicted Distinction), BTEC National Extended Certificate in Applied Law (predicted Merit), and BTEC National Extended Certificate in Applied Psychology (predicted Merit).

I’m very interested in studying at either City University or St. George’s University but feel completely lost about how to achieve this goal, like would i have to do another level 3 BTEC course for 2 years and where? Because I'd rather do a apprenticeship. Another challenge is that I’ve already applied to UCAS for law and received an offer from City University for the course, as well as not having much experience in the radiography field except for online work experiences and courses.

I emailed admissions with predicted grades about the foundation year- Introduction to Diagnostic and Therapeutic Radiography- at City University and they said I am not qualified.

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The problem you will face is the lack of a science A level or BTEC. So options you could consider:

- look at the entry requirements LSBU's Health and Social Care Foundation course
- consider taking a science A level in a year and apply to uni for 2026 entry
- if you turn 19 in 2025, consider taking a one-year Access to HE Diploma in a science-based subject and apply to uni for 2026 entry

You can search for NHS apprenticeships here:
https://www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/career-planning/study-and-training/nhs-apprenticeships

You will need shadowing experience in a hospital radiography department and public-facing work experience for a strong uni application. Contact local hospitals to ask for a day's shadowing experience over the summer once you have finished your Btecs. Your work experience can be anything that shows you are used to dealing with the general public - charity shop, retail, bar/cafe/restaurant work, care home, etc.
