How difficult is A level maths?

Tell me about your experiences, your maths background (how good you were at gcse level) and if you enjoyed the subject.

Thanks.

I didn't find it all too difficult overall, I got a 7 in GCSE Maths (2023) and sat A-Level Mathematics whilst in Year 12 under an accelerated curriculum and ended up with an A, so it's definitely not the most challenging in the world - but it's going to be different from person to person. Are you thinking of doing A-Level Mathematics or did you just start it?

Picked it for a level for next year. Predicted 7 in gcses, only rrly picked it for job opportunity's ngl. I guess I don't mind maths 🤷

I'd say it's so worth picking it - the GCSE requirements to do an A-Level are in place for a reason so you definitely have the potential to perform well in it.

A lot of the people in my year (13) were on the same grade and have been doing amazing in maths a level, a lot of people in my year were on the same grade and have not enjoyed it as much. Most of that comes down to how much consistent effort they gave the a level over the year.

I think with maths a level, it’s really doable as long as you enjoy it enough/are naturally motivated enough to be really persistent and make sure you know everything well. If i could suggest anything its that I wouldn’t be put off by it thinking that it is insanely hard or anything though, think it’ll make you overestimate it and probably make you really stressed if a concept takes a while to stick.

As i said though, if you like it enough, or you know yourself enough to know you’ll stay motivated then i think that you can most definitely do well

It’s all relative to your experiences, natural aptitude to numerical problems and probably most importantly what you enjoy. If you enjoy understanding how mathematical tools work you’ll probably naturally be more inclined to put the work in - think through the content in your spare time etc…

I got a 6 in maths, but I was still allowed to do it for a level. Its been tough so far ( I'm in year 13) , but once you get the content - you get it. Its super helpful though out in the field, therefore I would recommend anyone taking it despite how hard or easy it is, at the end of the day all a levels are quite hard so you have got to do what you want to do.

I also got a 7 in GCSE Maths, and it really depends on the effort you put in both in class and outside. At the end of year 12 I was on an E, and now I'm on a low A so it's easy to improve on! It also opens many doors in terms of what degrees you can pick. I defo reccommend picking it, just stay consistent during the two years and you'll find it enjoyable

I got a 9 at gcse and an A on FSMQ in year 11 (covers a lot of year 12 content). Im finding it mostly easy thus far. The more challenging topics for me have been the year 2 ones we’re doing but im reading ahead onto year 2 content ready for next year. Currently working at about 85% i think but only a term in so i dont want to jinx anything lol
What are your other a level choices? What are you aiming to do at uni? It’s a good choice to broaden your pathways for the future if youre able to put in the time to do lots of practice questions and not give up when you come across a rough problem!

Okay so you want to work topic by topic. Set yourself goals (e.g. mastering hypothesis tests in a week or two), so they're achievable. And cramming DOES NOTTT work with maths - that's a hard lesson I had to learn.

Also use TL Maths (my saviour), and if you're struggling with specific topics then just go through to that topic playlist on his channel and just go through the videos. They're like 5 mins long each, so easy to go through. And if you're like how I used to be and struggle with basically all the topics then go through all of his videos. Idk if you're in year 12 or 13 but if you're in year 13 then you still have plenty of time to improve so don't stress yourself to go through every topic quickly.

And and and use MADASMATHS (website with loadssss of maths q's), it's SUPER helpful!! Lastly, and I know that this is basic but PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS!! Like ask questions if you're struggling with something and ik that can be daunting because in year 12 it seemed like everyone was smart in my class and i was just there struggling. But if you aren't proactive then you won't see any improvement.

Anddd sometimes you can go through something in class and it seems fine but you forget about it when it comes to the exam (i go through this a lot), you need to make sure that you're going through what you have learnt in class. This could be during your free periods or something. Just go through a few questions making sure that you still remember what you did!

I wish you the best of luck because trust me ik how it feels to struggle with maths 😭, but when you understand what you're doing TRUST MEEEE it's so satisfying! And if you need anything just pm me
