Oxford Ertegun and Clarendon Scholarships

Hi everyone,

I’m applying for a History MPhil at Oxford with the January deadline. I’m currently working on my supporting documents for the Ertegun Scholarship and was wondering if anyone here has experience with the application process. What aspects should I focus on in my application, and what qualities do they prioritize in candidates?

Additionally, I’m looking for insights into the Clarendon Scholarship. Are there any tips or lesser-known criteria to keep in mind beyond what’s listed on their website?

Hi, I would recommend this webinar if you haven’t already, as it goes into depth about what Ertegun looks for in a strong application: https://youtu.be/UE_IP7CrDOY?si=T0k6cXlX5wH7IFJv

The Ertegun is a humanities-specific scholarship, and their priority seems to be the interdisciplinary nature of your research and your willingness to get involved in their community. The Clarendon on the other hand offers scholarships to all faculties across the university. Your statement of purpose and other supporting documents should be the priority as its the faculty who draw up their short list of candidates to put forward to the various scholarship committees.

I was a successful recipient of an Ertegun scholarship last year, so I’m happy to offer any insights I can in the remaining time left before the deadline 😬 Hope that helps and best of luck 🫶

Yeah for Ertegun you should just really emphasise how committed you are to focusing on the interdisciplinary aspects of the Humanities, and how you will actively become one of your country's leading minds/ambassadors in your field. They are only interested in giving funding to people that they think will make a genuine difference to how the Humanities can be perceived in broader society, how you can use their house environment to create genuine connections, and how your work can have the potential to be seen/felt in a community... I submitted mine recently, but from talking to previous applicants these rules are generally the one's you should follow to the letter.

Hi there again. Since there is no seperate topic for 2025 ertegun applicants, could you please let me know if you get an interview invitation? I have seen some people here getting interviewed in the first week of february last year and I am not sure when to expect such an invitation if i am shortlisted.

Hi! I hope your time at Ertegun House is treating you kindly so far! I received an interview invitation for the Ertegun yesterday, and I was wondering what types of questions you were asked, if you remember any specific ones, and any other tips you have for the interview phase? I haven't received an offer from my program proper yet, but they also don't do interviews for admissions. Thank you so much in advance!!

Thank you so much! Question - were you interviewed separately by both your nominating department and the Ertegun committee, or does the Ertegun committee make its decision solely based on the nomination and application materials after the departmental interview?

Nominees are only interviewed once for ertegun, by their faculty. The board makes the final decision based on feedback provided by the faculty on interview performance, alongside the supporting statements and CV’s. Hope that helps!

Hi! Would you mind if I ask when you received a final decision from ertegun?
