University music degrees with a focus on performance?

Does anyone know of any universities that have high credits for more music performance aspects or have a good reputation for music performance? I’m a vocal soprano

Hi!

I hope you are doing well and having a good Christmas so far!

Southampton offers an inclusive programme where you can tailor the degree to whatever you would like! In my second year, half of my module choices were performance based. In final year, you can also complete a dissertation in performance allowing for great opportunities in the future! The uni offers lots of help with further connection details outside of University as well which is really helpful.
Furthermore, there are lots of music societies (Chamber Choir and SUSingers) that you can join which perform lots of concerts throughout the year.

Hope this helps! 🙂

If you want to focus on performance, go to a conservatoire rather than a university

I’ve received offers from conservatoires, but my teachers have recommended I also apply to Unis as a second option 🤷*♀️

Conservatoire is better

Uni is more for people who want to study academically for E.g. English, maths, science, etc.

But Conservatoire is a specialised place for musicians and vocalists

I am planning to go to a Conservatoire in 2026 after A level

Trinity Laban is a great place if u want to check it out and is one of the top in the UK

Birmingham & Manchester both have close ties with the nearby conservatoires for instrumental/vocal tuition, as do a coupl e of the London universities.

Huddersfield has always been seen as the next best thing to a conservatoire.

As a soprano too, it might be worth half considering uni too (since as singers our voices take longer to develop, which can sometimes make the technique side of conservatoire a bit trickier as an undergrad) but if you’re looking, I’d reccomend York, Royal Holloway and also basically any of the unis that have partnerships with conservatoires (eg King’s College London). Hope it all goes well and good luck with conservatoire if that is what you choose to do!! 👍

Hi there,

It's great to hear you're considering studying Music at degree-level. We offer a variety of Music degrees, each offering opportunities for music performance. Why not take a look at our Music Performance at Royal Holloway webpage - it has all the information you need on the ensembles we have, performance opportunities, and more.

We would also recommend having a chat with a current music student here, where you can find out more.

Hope this helps!

Best wishes
Royal Holloway, University of London
