SQA Higher English Critical Essay Prose Fiction: PLEASE HELP!!

Hi there, I’m currently doing higher English this year and I am starting to have worries about the course.

English has never been a strong suit of mine and so I was wondering if anyone could help.

The issue I have is that I am doing Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde for my critical essay and that I scared that this is not an option for the prose fiction section of the exam, so I was wondering if anyone could ask there teachers since my school is being very unhelpful at the moment.

My second issue is that I am struggling a lot with the essay itself and so was wondering if anyone has any advice on where to start, help with essay plans, and things to add in the essay.

If anyone can help that would be the most appreciated.

hi!! i’m in 6th and just got out of higher. dr jekyll and mr hyde is most likely a crit essay option!! i got offered it for set text but ended up doing drama. either way, it’s definitely on the sqa’s list of studied texts!

not to be a show off, but it got an A at higher bc i’m a huge essay nerd. i’ll list some of my tips:

stay relevant to the question, ALWAYS!! make sure you briefly mention something related to the question at the start and end of every main body paragraph. sqa like consistency!

CONTRAST!! if you can compare or contrast things in your text, do it. for example, i’m my advanced higher dissertation i’m looking at contrasting times where certain themes are portrayed, ex: identity.

use your n5 techniques! it’s the same in higher, make sure you always show strong knowledge of the basics, like imagery and word choice. if you can pick up on any more advanced techniques, like symbolism, do it.

pick versatile quotes!! this one is so important. i saved myself LOADS of time instead of memorising quotes, i picked a smaller amount that could be used to analyse a variety of themes. i would also recommend quoting scenes as the sqa allows this, ex: instead of “she said this” you can say “when this scene happens” if that makes sense.

reread and understand the question fully! i know this sounds stupid but sometimes i find myself getting carried away on a tangent. bring a highlighter w you so you can keep track of what the question actually is!!

thats all i can think of at the moment, good luck with higher and have a good christmas!!)
