Student Finance - Live with Boyfriend, Under 25, have children under 18

Hi,

I have applied for a Primary PGCE and have been looking at the funding due to needing childcare help. I am getting confused if I need to include my partner’s income as we aren’t married just live together.

Due to me having children under 18 when I did my BA I was classed as an independent and didn’t need to include my parents income, is this still the case as I am still under 25 and my children are still under 18? So would that mean I don’t have to include my partner’s income either? I have also been financially independent for 3 years.

I have done some reading but it seems to be saying different things or I’m just misunderstanding the information. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there. If you are under 25 years old and have care of a child you would automatically be assessed as an independent student. Only if you were aged over 25 with a child would we still require your partners income details so this is not required. Have you applied and has this been requested? Thanks, David

Hi,

Thank you for your response. I haven’t applied yet, I was just doing in depth research before I accepted my place and applied.

Hello, I’m now applying for my finance and it is asking for my partner’s income which I was under the impression I didn’t need to include but assuming it is asking as I have put Living with Partner, as we aren’t married, under relationship? Can someone help and explain?

If I include my partner’s income I end up losing out on the childcare grant (according to the student finance calculator online) due to his income. The information is confusing and I keep going round in circles!

Hi there, if you are applying via the online account this is a standard request for sponsor financial information (based on your age) however once the application has been reviewed by the assessment team this request should be removed, you can put your partner's contact information in to allow the application to proceed, but as David previously advised this will be manually reviewed by the assessment team and your partners information is not required as you are under 25 at the start of your course and have care of a child. Thanks, Stephen.

Thank you for your reply. So just to clarify I still put in his income and then when it is assessed it won’t be included in the assessment? Would this mean I would still get the childcare grant?

Hi there,

Yes, the assessor will remove the details as you're under 25 and award the relevant finance.

Thanks,
Claire

Hello,

So I received an email yesterday to say I don’t qualify for either PLA or CCG due to household income.

Following from the advice on this thread the household income shouldn’t have been taken into account. I found another thread from two weeks ago with someone in the exact same position who got a referral. How do I go about getting one?

Thanks!
