Maintenance loan after previous year of study.

Hello,

I received maintenance for one previous year of study(only from September-November) I was wondering if I would be entitled to enough finance to cover the course I am applying for now?

It is a foundation year + 4 years under graduate as there is a compulsory study abroad year.

additionally how would my maintenance loan be affected? I owe SFE £2000 currently and I’m on a payment plan, how would this be dedicated from future maintenance loans? As I worry about affording rent if it’s too unaffordable.

Thank you.

Hi there, what is the name of the university will you be applying to? What is the exact course title? Is this a Full Time or Part Time course? How many years is the course in total? Thanks. Stephen.

Hi there,

Your maintenance loan is not affected by your previous study. However, if you have any outstanding overpayment once you begin your course then this would be clawed back from your next year's of entitlement. Thanks, Jason

Hi,

Just to confirm, would SFE finance the full 5 years of study both tuition and maintenance?

In regards to clawing back the amount owed, it would sit around £1800 by September. Would it be taken in full or in instalments? Would I be able to arrange this with SFE?

Thank you.

Hi there,

If you've had one year (or less) of previous study then you'd be funded for all years of your new course. The overpayment would be clawed back from next year's funding but it would reduce all three of the payments (rather than only be taking out of the first term). Thanks, Jason

Hi,

Great, thank you.

Would you be able to confirm if it’s possible to defer the claw-back to a later year or set up a payment plan? It would be near impossible for me to pay rent with the amount deducted from the 3 payments (if split evenly it would be £730 deducted each payment.) and I cannot commute.

Thank you.

Hi there,

When you apply and the application is approved, we will take the overpayment off your overall entitlement for this year. Once you receive your Notification Letter confirming your finance, if you believe you will be in financial difficulty with the overpayment coming off, then it may be possible to apply for financial hardship.

You would need to contact us and we can send the form to you. You would complete and return the form, with your last 3 months bank statements for all accounts in you name. The team can normally only review this about 4-6 weeks before your course start date. They will then advise you if this has been accepted or not to defer part of the overpayment or all of it, till the end of the year.

Thanks,
Claire

Hi,

Thank you for that information.

My total owed is £2148.21
If this is split across the 3 payments, that is £716.07.

Last year I received £3411.21 as I am eligible for the maximum amount. If this was the same amount for 2025, it would leave me with £2695.14.

Decent accommodation in a safe area with minimum privacy for my diagnosed social anxiety (which I received DSA for), would total around £2800 every 3 months.

I have a part time job and I’m hoping to save £2000 to split across this 3 payments to bump my total up (after deductions) to £3,361.14. After rent this would still only leave me with £561.14 to survive on for 3 months.

Would say having the £2000 saved go against me if I submitted the financial difficulty form? As I know £2000 may look like a lot up front but it wouldn’t increase after September as I wouldn’t have a job.

I will also be paying £50 a month from January until August towards the overpayment. Will this be reflected in the reductions?

Thank you.

Hi there,

If you are making monthly repayments to your overpayment then yes it would show this reduced on your overpayment balance.

Thanks, Drew

Hi,

Thank you for that.

To confirm;

Would the £2000 saved that would be split across the 3 payments reflect negatively when I fill in the financial difficulty form?

Also, say I have a reduced amount on my entitlement letter in March. When payments start in September will that amount be increased to reflect the payments made?

Thank you.

Hi there, Yes, any deductions would be split over the 3 installments of the maintenance loan payments for the academic year. Any previous repayments you have paid so far will be deducted from the overall overpayment by the time of the start of the new academic year. Thanks, Stephen.
