Hi Ghgfhgfff, thanks for your question.

Generally you would not join Exeter-based societies as a student at the Penryn Campus. Our students at our Penryn Campus are part of a different student union which is shared with Falmouth University, and through which they can access a range of over 150 different sports clubs and societies. You can find a full A-Z list of these here. As a student at the Cornwall Campus myself I've been involved in a range of sports like 5-a-side football, American football and kayaking, and a range of societies such as Expedition society, Eco Soc and Wild Doc Soc. As with many Student Unions, if you feel there is a society you wish to join that does not exist you can also gain support to start your own society too. Is there anything specifically you were interested in joining, and I can help signpost you to specific societies of interest?

I don't really think you've thought about the logistics of this. Falmouth is (over) 2 hours away from Exeter - it's literally over 100 miles away.

Regardless of whether it's "permitted" to join the main campus SU, there is little point as their services will be based in Exeter physically to support students on that physical campus. Likewise the Exeter main campus societies are based in Exeter. How are you going to participate in a society meeting at a location 2 hours away from you regularly?

If there's a society you want to participate in not available currently at the Cornwall campus, just start it yourself.

Hi Ghgfhgff,

As artful_lounger has explained, this would not be practical given the distances involved. Joining a student union isn't so much of an active choice that a student makes but more something that is automatically determined by the campus you're studying at, in this case being at the Penryn Campus and being a part of the Falmouth and Exeter Student Union.

Is there a particular reason you were interested in joining the student union for our Streatham and St Luke's campuses?

To be honest it was just because it seems that the main campus have better and bigger facilities when it comes to sport, it seems more competitive and well respected but if you are not able to join the student union at the main campus whilst being at the cornwall campus then ok I guess

I would implore you to go on google maps and look at the directions from Exeter to Falmouth and vice versa.

How do you anticipate using sports facilities on the main campus that are over 100 miles away from where you are living on the Cornwall campus?

Hi Ghgfhgfff,

Although there are some differences in facilities, there are still plenty of opportunities for sports on our Penryn Campus. This includes a modern Sports Centre with a 90 station gym, four court sports hall and a fitness and dance studio, as well as a floodlight multi-use games arena suitable for activities such as 5-a-side football. Just off campus, we have access to multiple full sized sports pitches regularly used by our rugby, football and hockey teams. Being in Cornwall also gives you access to lots of water sports which you may not have tried before, such as kayaking, surfing, sailing and stand-up paddle boarding, alongside other adventure sports such as climbing.

Lots of our sports teams will play competitively throughout the year, including in BUCS against other universities and also in a number of local Cornish leagues. A unique feature of studying at our Penryn Campus is the opportunity to represent the university in our annual rivalry game, called The Bottle Match, between University of Exeter Penryn Campus and Imperial College London. This varsity match arises from a historical rivalry between the rugby teams of Cambourne School of Mines and Royal School of Mines and is the second oldest varsity game in the world. Today the same fixtures is contested in a number of different sports and each year the games alternate between being hosted in Cornwall or London.

Are there any particular sports you were interested in? If you search on our Student Union website here you will find more information about each sport club, including details on where and when they meet to train or play fixtures.
