Studying Politics at University

Hi, I'm in Year 12 and I'm currently studying History, Law & Religious Studies for A Level, and I'm doing an EPQ, too. Is this a good combo for studying Politics at university? Also, what kind of careers are available to someone who graduates with a degree in Politics? It sounds like a silly question but I would like to go down this route and I need clarity, thanks

Hey, I’m in my first year at uni studying Politics and IR. I chose the same alevels as you but instead of RS i choose Politics! your alevels are such a great blend especially RS and History. Trust me history and law will help a lot with uni politics. I’m not 100% sure what i want to do but there are multiple options, such as being a solicitor, going into diplomacy, working for the government, working for politicians, journalism but also you could teach. There are multiple doors Politics opens but it really depends on what you want so you can do what it takes to achieve it! EPQ is also great! Honestly please take what you personally enjoy and do some extra research so you know this is what you want to study.

Thank you so much for the help, and for clearing things up for me! How did you revise for History… the content is so heavy and I’m running out of ideas 🤯
And how would you describe studying for your degree, in regards to the content? I really do want to study Politics and IR in uni, fingers crossed.

No problem! For history it might not seem helpful but flash cards with key dates and short summary’s of what that led to. For me, i made big timelines for each topic and had condensed notes with only necessary stuff. Also use seneca in your free time just for quick revision, it doesn’t help that much but it keeps your memory fresh. I also found planning past paper questions quite helpful because it would highlight significant gaps of knowledge and improve my planning skills. Good luck! For uni, i would say it is obvious the content will be quite heavy but personally i really enjoy the subject since im quite passionate about it. Then again it is only my first year and that is almost like the honeymoon phase. If you like it, take it, it makes studying it easier. Hope you study it!
