How hard is an languages degree

I really want to do Spanish or beginner french at university but I struggle with time management and writing a lot, I also struggle with anxiety so do you have to do presentations or speak out loud quite often? And are teachers at university generally stricter than a level or is it more relaxed?

Hello Ivysleeper,

This will probably depend on the university that you attend, but I can give you my experience as a Surrey student studying French and Spanish (I also did Spanish from beginners level).

I personally found that my lecturers were more relaxed at university compared to secondary school and that I could approach them in a more sincere manner.

In terms of presentations, I had a few presentations to do such as doing group discussions, simulating a job interview (in French and Spanish) and other forms of oral exams. My class sizes at Surrey are small and my lessons are primarily seminar-based rather than being in a massive lecture theatre so class participation and attendance is strongly encouraged.

I also struggle with time management and writing a lot but in order to help overcome this, I asked my lecturers for support along with using the student support services available at my university.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Best regards,
Imane
