Can you transfer to a Russel Group Uni with bad A-levels but a 1:1 in first year?

In August I got a CCD in my A levels but was able to study Sport and Exercise Science in 1st year at Birmingham City University. I am currently doing really well in first year scoring 70% and over in all my modules. I have already spoken to university admissions about transferring second year and had confirmed that I could potentially transfer. I have submitted my application and just waiting to see if I may receive an offer.
I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this and had received an offer to transfer?
Is there a strong chance I could receive an offer?

Generally speaking, no. To transfer to any university, they normally ask that you meet their A level (or equivalent) entry requirements. This is regardless of how well you've done in your first year elsewhere.

And btw, for sports related subjects non-RG Unis are actually better - they have a better placements system, more connections and far more credibility with employers.

Is there any particular reason why you’re looking to transfer to RG?

No particular reason just really if there’s a chance I would be able to go to a more prestigious university

I’m only asking as rankings do not matter AFAIK.

A 1st from BCU will probably look better than a lower grade at an RG university, that’s why.

Yeah but it’s just also that I just don’t like BCU in general but thank you

Ah fair enough then, hopefully you can transfer to a better university.
Well the most "prestigious" university for sports science is most likely Loughborough I think  not any RG uni. "Prestige" is a pretty meaningless metric anyway - unless you're aiming to go into investment banking or management consulting, such concepts are more or less meaningless.

As far as transferring directly into second year at another uni, this is always going to be at the "receiving" university's discretion - it's not a "standard" formalised process (unlike e.g. in the US). I suspect a good 1st in all your results will be in your favour, whether or not they would still expect you to meet the standard entry criteria outside of those would be at their discretion as well. Many universities may require you just reapply for first year entry though - and again, whether they'll accept your first year results as meeting their entry criteria or expect your A-levels to meet their standard criteria is going to be a case by case situation for each uni I suspect.

Therefore, your best bet is to just contact each uni to ask and see what they say. Note that most unis will be in their "shut down" period over the new year period and you probably won't get any responses until early-mid January (and even then due to backlogs there might not be any response till later January). So it might be a bit tight trying to confirm this ahead of the deadline. Remember also you can add choices (up to five) right up until the deadline in January

If the uni you wish to apply to has already confirmed they will consider you though then, that's your answer! :h:

Thank you
I have offers from Liverpool and Newcastle. Not the highest tier universities but a leg up from Leicester University. Also Surrey university, which is not a Russel group but well ranked for my particular course. I hope you get the offers your looking for. I got CCC

Hi, I hope you don't mind me asking, but what course where are you looking to transfer to and what conditions do you have to meet to transfer? I only ask because I'm also interested to transferring to those universities as well

No worries I have noticed that the volunteers/staffers can be pretty pretentious about their responses. I mean the comment that a 1st from your current uni would be better than a lower grade from another as if you can’t hope to achieve a first was very rude. I hope you get the offer from Keele. I would look into Nottingham because they seem to more lenient with entry requires for second year.

Computer Science. 60% minimum across all modules with no resits or failures. Highest offer is 70% overall with no resits or failures.

Hi @moniqa263,

We’re so pleased to hear that you’re doing so well in your first year at Birmingham City University 😊

Many students successfully transfer between universities, and if your current university has already confirmed that it’s possible, that’s a great starting point. The chances of receiving an offer for transfer can depend on a number of factors, such as course availability at the university you're applying to and the strength of your application.

While there’s no guaranteed answer, it’s fantastic that you’ve taken the right steps by submitting your application, as it’s always worth a try! Hopefully, you'll hear some good news soon 🍀

Has anyone else gone through a similar transfer experience? We’d love to hear your stories below.

Best wishes,

Clare
