Picking a university !

I really dislike my current sixth form because

1- people - well tbh nerdy and close minded and extremely academics oriented
2 - small diversity of thinking , clever but exceedingly similar
3 - general interests - music , culture , clothes . No one gets me / is similar
4 - general demeanour of reserved / weak people
5 - close minded intense boring as hell people
6 - environment monotonous and repetitive ,

Now , for university , I obviously believe I am
Smart , maybe smart enough for oxbridge (99988888876) also I go to top grammar school sooo in context it looks subpar
BUT idk if I can handle this environment again
Idk if I can grow as a person and. Truly be happy again
Flip
My career prospects are lessened , but truly only marginally ,
People + enviro is important to me

2 I truly want to be an influential, (+rich) person, I am a careerist I would say , but not in the IB / city / corporate sense
Respect and power of some sorts in the political / legal / development sphere of career is highly valued to me
All the people that seem to be influential in progression rn r from oxbridge (blanket statement ik)

3
PEOPLE!
I want to be surrounded by likeminded people , and a stimulating environment , preferably a city
I want diverse people I think not just books to talk to - range of subjects and backgrounds and thoughts
Flip
Oxbridge obviously will have a range , but honestly with that level of education would be people with the same sort of ethos vibes aspirations

Penultimately
Social life is important to me , but at the same time in no holier than thou way I don't want to be surrounded by INTENSE party people either

Lastly
I am a Londoner , I love London , for all my complaints it's one of the top cities in the world and that is such a privilege
Careers wise , fashion wise , social and it's just a hub for everything : concerts gigs pop up what not ur fav artist WILL be at London
BUT
I hear time and time again , Leave ur home city , especially from ldners , go to a diff city for uni to grow and change and be independent
And I totally agree , but London unis are also right behind Oxbridge and I maintain I want to have a prestigious uni in my name
BUT ALSO
social life is spenny
BUT
in other unis Nottingham , Warwick etc , I heard it's full of Londoners which would be great tbh - ppl I could relate to in that way

Anyway rant OVER, please someone help
Oxbridge / London unis / Other
Am I being narrow minded, can anyone drop some words of wisdom

I suggest that you plan for a gap year. Your ideas appear to be all over the place at present. You seek a diversity of people, but you also hint at liking to be with people you regard as being like you. You also appear to look down a bit on people who do not accord with your idea of what it is to be clever and/or cool.

It may go without saying that, if people being very academic irritates you, aiming to study at Oxford and Cambridge might not be a good idea. The more significant point here is that those universities are not for people who like to believe that they are the cleverest person in the room, or the only one who really "gets it". They are for people who know that they are clever, but enjoy the cleverness of others. The word collegiate has real resonance at those universities. They are very social places.

I also suggest that you think about what you might wish to do in order to live happily, and not just about wealth, power, and status.

In a gap year, I suggest that you might try at least three things:

1. Travel. On the beaten path or off it.

2. Work in a low status job. Tend bar, make coffee, sell shoes, work a bin route or road crew, etc.

3. Read. Read everything and anything.

The personal growth from that sort of thing can be remarkable.

Lastly, try some Alan Watts -

You ask your best question right at the end. The answer is yes you are being both completely narrow minded alongside displaying a wheel barrow worth of naviety and lack of introspection which is not a very good mix. All things considered a career in politics sounds like an ideal fit.

After reading your post, I can spot an obvious flaw in this assumption.

If you don’t like your sixth form because the people are “nerdy” and “academically-oriented”, I would definitely rule out Oxford, Cambridge, the top London ones and some others too (e.g. St Andrews, Nottingham, etc.).

If you are in Y12 now, I would advice you to get your head down and get some good predicted grades first. Otherwise, you may not even have the luxury of choice.

Hello @mao3!

I agree with @nwar in the sense that having good grades will allow you to have more potential options at hand in the event that you wish to go to university in the UK. Likewise, the courses vary a lot from faculty to faculty, let alone from university to university. Therefore, it would be sensible to first work out what you might want to do, and then evaluate what options you have on the table.

All the best,
Abian.

One thing worth noting is that there is generally a huge disconnect between what we consider to be a successful (wealthy) career and being happy in life. The pursuit of success (wealth) rarely delivers happiness unless you are the sort of person so devoid of emotion that money genuinely brings happiness.

If you frame success in life as being happy then all of a sudden the world opens up to you, earning lots of money becomes irrelevant and you free your mind to pursue professions or jobs that meet your criteria. You sound like a people person, so roles in the caring profession / nursing or teaching / education or charity may well offer what you seek.

As for university - forget the Russel Group. Predominantly full of academics looking to get value for money at all costs. I think you might find other universities don't take themselves so seriously whilst still achieving. But figure out what you want to do first. No point in going to university on a hope.

I agree with the happy/rich point. The OP doesn't come across as a "people person". On the contrary, he or she comes across in the opening post as inclined to be judgmental and aloof. He or she states an interest in "power", and "respect". A job in caring hardly sounds like the OP's thing.

As for the Russell Group, I am not sure what your point is. Every university is full of academics. Your comment about value for money is hard to follow. Most academics are not involved in questions of value for money.

My point is that most undergraduates go to university because they believe having a degree will provide skills and knowledge that will help them get a job. The reality is that Russel Group universities put a lot of emphasis on academia, writing, critical thinking and many other skills that employers are not interested in. By contrast, many of the non-Russel Group universities have cottoned onto the reality of what students actually want and have reformulated their courses to provide genuine vocational training in the subject field. Russel Group universities are also doing this although to a lesser extent mainly because one of the biggest Key Indicators Universities are being judged on by government is success in employability post graduation.

Employers of graduates are interested in critical thinking and writing skills. Many if not most university degrees are not vocational. This does not render graduates unemployable.

Agreed. But around a third of grads end up in non-graduate work and around half don't use the qualifications they gained. One has to wonder what the value of a degree is if a near majority don't need / use it. I have very much wondered if there are better alternatives for job / skills training than university degrees. Universities are all about printing certificates. Employers are all about skills and knowledge.

Go to Leeds or Liverpool. You’ll have a blast, get the corners knocked off you and be in a lively, cheap city.

There are various levels of university. The best ones produce employable graduates. What those graduates know is less important than their ability to think. The worst universities sell meaningless bits of paper.

That's one way of interpreting it. Another way is that the most employable graduates have the ability to get into the supposed "best" university which simply gives them a piece of paper on based on the abilities they already had.

I think it is no surprise that the universities that have the highest entry requirements produce the best graduates. It doesn't mean they offer the best teaching and learning experience and in my view, often don't.

On what do you base that view? How many universities have you studied and taught at? I have studied at two (one excellent, one meh, and taught at five (two excellent, one good, one meh, one dire). I don't agree with your analysis of the value of an academic degree.
