Not going back to uni- but finishing the course

Ive studied for 2 years at a Uni 2 hours from home. Did not like living there, and my 2 years were on the whole relatively miserable. Im keen to finish my course from home, online.

All lectures are posted online, some seminar tutors put materials online, and I have never had to do an in person exam, all my work has been essay based. In 2nd year, i probably attended only half my lectures or seminars, and never recieved emails asking where I was from the Uni. In many ways, being away from home was a distraction and prevented me from studying to my full potential.

If required, I'd happily go up for disseration meetings, but living in the univeristy town is a real red line for me. What is the best way to approach this with the Uni- I presume if they knew the full facts they would not be happy with my intentions to not be present for my course.

Should I keep them in the dark and then see what comes from my lack of attendance? Should I be forthcoming with my circumstances and see what they say?

Any thoughts are welcome.

The answer depends on the rules of your university. For example, at least two well known universities require undergraduates to live within a specific radius of a fixed point in the university city. Rules about attendance at classes vary from place to place.

It would be better to discuss your plans with your university rather than waiting for a possible problem to develop. If your unhappiness has impacted your health and studies, the university is likely to wish to assist if it can.

I hope that you feel happier soon.

Hi,

I’d recommend being open with your university about your situation. Reach out to your academic advisor or course leader, explaining how living away from home has affected your well-being and academic focus, and express your intention to complete your course remotely. Highlight that lectures and most materials are online, and assure them of your commitment to attending essential in-person sessions like dissertation meetings if required. Universities are often supportive of students facing challenges, and a proactive, honest approach can help you work out a solution that aligns with your needs and their expectations.

Thanks !
As above, definitely check with the uni/your personal tutor. If you don't attend in person events and only attend online ones, and your uni doesn't know about it/hasn't agreed to that, you could potentially get removed from the course for non-engagement, which would presumably be something you don't want to happen!
