British Council Language Assistant 2025/26

Hey! Has anyone else applied for this? I'm currently writing my application, and I'm applying for Germany. I'm a final year Biomed student, I am not doing a language degree but I love Germany and want to work there, so I feel like this could be a great stepping stone for me.

Hi 🙂 I'm currently in the process of applying for mine (I hope to go to France) and it is part of my degree (I do psych and French), I've also heard its very good for anything languages based and of course you'll hopefully get the benefit of extensive german practise!

Hi, I almost gave up and decided to au pair in Germany instead, but at the last minute I decided to finish off my application since I already requested a reference from my uni tutor, I felt it was disrespectful to not at least finish my application. Tbh, ELA pays way more than au pairing, but I'd be happy doing either

Fair enough, I looked into au pairing and tbf considering some of them pay like 400 euro a month and give you free accommodation I kind of figured it amounts to more money overall sooo tempted to do that instead but maybe I'll finish my application now and decide later.

Yeah, you are right actually! Depending on the host family, some will pay for your phone plan, bring you on holidays, which amounts to more than 1000€ a month. The only issue I have is lack of independence, and the amount of hours you have to work, compared to ELA, which is only 12 hours/week. Au pairs have to work 30 hours/week. And also I think ELA is more impressive on a CV than au pair, but at the end of the day it's a cultural exchange. I'm planning on doing a masters in Germany afterwards anyways
