The Student Room Group

starting a levels late with no idea how :(

hii!! i was looking for advice on my situation right now; I've come back to the UK from abroad recently and I'm meant to be in year 12, studying for my a levels (physics, maths, chemistry as my main subjects and computer science as my sub but if push comes to shove, i can change them). I have no idea how to approach learning for them for many reasons;
- my living arrangements aren't permanent for now and most likely will change multiple times because of my parents
- I have missed a whole term already and in the country I was previously they only had the cambridge international exam board so I'm not familiar with the exam boards in the uk
- my family isn't in a good financial situation at the moment and I don't want to add to that
I have the option of going to a college near me, but I don't know how they work specifically as I know most about sixth forms as I planned on going to one before moving. I can try self studying as I've done it before for my o-levels (gcse equivalent) but I don't know which exam board is best (resources, specification content, etc). Online learning and private tuition is expensive so that is a last resort.
if anyone could give some advice on the exam boards or how colleges work, or any useful tips, it would be greatly appreciated. For reference, I have 2 main career paths I'm choosing between which are aerospace engineering and astrophysics.
I hope you all have a good day/night!!

hi i am also yr 12 and i am doing maths, chemistry, physics and further maths a levels.

The exam boards are responsible for designing papers and syllabus. All exam boards follow similar syllabus.. Most common exam boards are AQA(all of my a levels are AQA exam board), Edexcel, OCR.

For maths, I would suggest you to practice as much as possible. If you don't know a topic, watch a youtube video. Best youtube channels: TL maths and exam solutions, but also there are plenty others. For practice, use drfrostmaths and physicsandmathstutor.co.uk websites. Make sure you have chosen the correct exam board to practice the questions.

For chemistry and physics, I would recommend you to have a good understanding of the topic before you do anything. The syllabus can be found when you search google "(ur exam board) A level (subject) specification" and there will be an online pdf of all the topic you should learn - it will give you details on what should be covered. Then, take a screenshot of a particular subsection. Then, put the screenshot on chatgpt and ask "Explain me everything in this syllabus in depth". It will explain you really well, and you can ask questions - basically it's your teacher. The, for the topics that involve diagrams, use youtube. After you understand everything, use physics and maths tutour practice questions by topic. Mark your work. You will find that some questions are similar, but have different wording. Memorise the markscheme answer for these kinds of questions - make flashcards. Revise consistently.

Ask if you need any further help, i am always happy to help. I can also help you as a guide

Good luck

Does the college have places for those A level courses?

Look up their prospectus and it should say which board they offer.

For Maths, Edexcel is the most common with loads of free resources.

I'm going to visit the college tomorrow and ask for some information so I can better understand my options so I'll know then if they have places or not. I'll definitely check out their prospectus later too and thank you for the advice on maths!!

Good luck.

If the Maths is Edexcel, Dr Frost has detailed support here:

Year 13 https://www.drfrost.org/courses.php?coid=12815
