Hii!
I'm a current student at SuMs and here are some of my thoughts on the school so far.
In general, I think the school is great! I came from a good grammar school, but the main reason I wanted to go to a Maths school in particular was the method of teaching. We often work together on large whiteboards with time in class to explore our subjects beyond the curriculum, which is really useful for a deeper understanding of your subjects and in general supercurricular interests. Another difference is that the content is taught in an order and way that links together most topics in a very seamless way, which helps strengthen your understanding greatly.
Since we are the first cohort, there are no current exam/university results to base your application decision on. However, I can say the students here are very bright, even in comparison to the other maths schools. Most students here came from being at the top of their classes so the average “level” is pretty high. But I find this really useful because I am always challenged and feel that I am always learning something new! Also, note that our current head teachers were previous teachers at KCLMS and have been able to implement similar schemes at SuMs.
But SuMs is also different from the other maths schools because it is a different school! Our student body is really close and our student council is very active. We do a lot of events, organised and ran by students. We get a lot of independence and space to express our interests whether this be through clubs, events, or trips. (We do more than just maths!)
The community here is unlike any other in my opinion. Everyone is really welcoming and willing to help if you are stuck and people are interested in greater Stem topics which is so inspiring. It is honestly amazing having people who also genuinely love maths and Stem in the same way you do. I am so glad I went to a maths school for that reason.
If you are passionate and love Maths plus whatever other subjects you pick when applying to SuMs, I am pretty certain you would love being here. I wish you the best of luck with your entrance exam coming up and if you have any other questions let me know!

Thank you for detailed feedback. I am wondering if you can share some details on how strong surrey is with Economics and computer science with regards to teaching and project support ..etc. Also how do they approach further math and math syllabus ? What A level specs do they use please ?

I got one today

I got 1 on Wednesday, and already accepted it. This is kinda irrelevant, but I wasn't there on the 11th due to an external meeting. Can you tell me how many people tried out for the exam?

I don't take economics, but from what I know, the teacher is excellent and there have already been trips for economics. Our computing teacher is also superb and one of the best teachers I've ever had. For maths we do OCR but this is on the website. Maths is approached via three parts: core, stats/discrete, and mech separately, but the maths and further maths specs are combined. We arent told which topics are from which A-level, so it's seen more as learning just maths rather than focusing on the exams. I assume, though, that as the year goes on, this will change.

Are you referring to just the morning/afternoon session, or overall? Still, it's impressive we beat all those applicants.

Both slots. I discussed it with some friends who had the latter slot, and that's the conclusion we came to. We're pretty sure 250 people got to the interview stage.

So that means that just a little more than 2/5 of those interviewed actually advanced to our place. I heard that less than 110 can get in because of the adaptability to the new building. I might just be wrong

I think you’re right, around 100 people get let in.

We haven't done things related to UCAS yet because it is still only half way year 12 for us but we have a lesson a week on problem-solving, which is prep for the uni exams. We're also encouraged to explore our subjects beyond the curriculum, which is good for our personal statements. I do also believe that we will get lots of support in applying and mock interviews etc..

Hey. I had a meeting with someone from this school. They say that unless the journey is downright impossible, you should still consider this school. Someone in SuMs (according to the person I met with) apparently lives on the outskirts of Dorset and has a 2 hour journey to and from the school. I have a journey mapped out that takes 1 hour to do, so if you like the school, definitely keep your eyes on it and do go if you can.

Thanks! That's true ngl and i think a smaller community for a sixth form is so much better. One of the sixth forms that I applied to has over 1000 students in the sixth form and 2000 in their secondary!😭 Is SuMs ur first option?
