University life in Leicester

Hi Guys ! if you’re reading this you probably already study in Leicester or are considering it in the upcoming academic year and want to know more about what it’s like living here . Let me fill you in , as an international student at De Montfort University (DMU), I quickly discovered that Leicester is more than just a city; it’s a vibrant, welcoming community perfect for students that very quickly felt like a second home to me .If you’re considering studying here, let me share some highlights that make living in Leicester an incredible experience.
One of Leicester’s best features is how everything is conveniently close. DMU’s campus is just a short walk from the city centre, where you’ll find shops, restaurants, and social activities . Plus, the train station is close by to , making it simple to explore other UK cities. Whether you’re planning a day trip to London, Birmingham, or Nottingham, Leicester’s central location means you can hop on a train and be there in no time. Did I mention it’s a walkable city , you can pretty much walk everywhere you need to in a few minutes . And compared to larger UK cities, Leicester is refreshingly affordable. From student accommodation to everyday expenses like groceries and transport, your budget will stretch further here. This affordability means you can enjoy more of what Leicester has to offer without breaking the bank. And you can afford to do more with the finances you do have.
One of favourite things about Leicester is how it offers a mix of activities to suit all interests, that are also affordable. Depending on what you like , there is something just for you. History buffs can explore the King Richard III Visitor Centre or take a stroll to the museum. Sports fans can catch a Leicester City football match or a Tigers rugby game( As a South African the latter is my preference). To relax I love to take walks in , Abbey Park, Victoria Park , Aylestone meadows and other park. They are also perfect spots for picnics or outdoor reading sessions in the summer times.
Although this is not my forte, I’ve heard that the nightlife in Leicester is equally exciting. The city has a variety of pubs, bars, and clubs catering to different tastes. If you prefer quieter evenings, you can go the cinema or watch a play in the city centre.
As an international student , it was important for me to study in a city that is culturally diverse and accepting . Leicester is one of the UK’s most diverse cities, and this is reflected in its food, festivals, and community spirit. Narborough road is famous for its mix of cuisines like Indian , Turkish , Jamaican ect and is a must-visit for food lovers. The city also hosts Diwali celebrations, a magical experience filled with lights, music, and delicious treats.
I have been a member of the Leicester community for 3 years now and I’ve benefitted from how welcoming Leicester’s student community is. There are two different universities which means twice as many students to interact with. DMU’s campus has a lot going on, with societies and clubs catering to every interest, from Women in STEM to Formula One enthusiasts ( those are my preferences but there are plenty of other options). And so does University of Leicester , I have had the opportunity to attend some of the shared sports and social events and I can confirm they are just as fun as ours.
It may not be the biggest city or the wildest in terms of night life but it really is amazing. The people are incredible and the opportunities are endless . If you are looking for a place that can feel like home away from home then I would strongly advise you to pop into one of our open days and come check out the city and our campus.
