Access course at Glasgow?

Hi all,

I'll try to make this short. Due to circumstances out of my control, I haven't been in formal schooling since the end of Year 8. I have no GCSEs or A Levels due to these circumstances, including but not limited to mental health and an abusive home, which I am now out of. Looking to get back into formal education and looking to do a History or Classics degree at the University of Glasgow. Their access program seems the most accessible, and apparently they actually do accept students who go on from access (as opposed to some things I've read about Edinburgh.) I was wondering if anyone here has gone on to do a similar degree through access, if it's possible, and if my lack of any formal qualifications will make it harder for me to relieve undergraduate offers from the university.

Thank you in advance!

Hey, first are you over 21? You need to be 21 or over start of the course to go through this route as a mature student... I think. I am current 2nd year mature student at Glasgow studying history and I take classics and archaeology as my electives. I went through the SWAP route at one of the local colleges but many of my friends took the access route, I think it is all online whilst SWAP you attend actual college but either will get you into university. I even received an offer from Edinburgh.

You will find many students at university who took these routes so please if its what you want to do, go for it and enjoy. I also received 5 offers from all 5 universities I applied to, though I chose Glasgow as I loved the loo of their History program.

Hi there,

How are you doing😃?

Great to hear that you are interested in studying here at UofG!

As Nikki mentioned, by chance are you a mature student (Over 21)? If so, I believe our Access to Higher Education may be an option for you...

Our Access to Higher Education Programme offers a part-time, flexible route to degree study for adults returning to education, or those who meet our Widening Participation eligibility criteria. We offer a wide range of academic subjects on Access, with students taking two relevant subjects to allow them to progress on to their degree of choice. In addition to their two Access subjects, students will engage in our Skills, Support and Progression programme.

You can find out more here

If you have any questions though, please don't hesitate to get back in touch😀

Thanks,

Niall
