Is anyone else desperate to go off to uni?

Hi I live in a really tiny irrelevant village and literally all I want to do is go off to uni so was just wondering if anyone feels the same? most people I talk to say they’re nervous or scared of going to uni and I am too but mostly I just want September to get here already so I can go be myself meet other people and have fun. anyone else in the same situation?!

Hello!

Whilst I’m not in exactly the same situation as you in that I’m already in university and a postgrad at that (see I never want to leave!), I couldn’t wait to go to uni when I was doing my a levels at school. I can vividly remember being at school and having the thrill of excitement when I was choosing which accommodation to apply for and when the set texts list arrived I’d bought and read them all way before the terms started.

I wasn’t really living in a small village that I wanted to leave, my reason for wanting to go was that I loved studying English and couldn’t wait to be in university as it sounded so exciting and meant I would be studying it for real this time, not just at school.

When I arrived at uni, which was in a town much smaller than my own, it was everything I wanted uni to be, because my driving factor was English and I didn’t expect all the clubs and societies to join, which I threw myself into.

What I want to say is, it will be a lot different to everything you’re used to and don’t be too keen to want to leave your village, and your family, it’s still your home. Be prepared for a bit of a shock to your system as it’s hard work as well as lots of fun and it’s a big thing moving away from home for the first time. But it is a great experience and I’m sure you will enjoy every minute. Whilst you say you can’t wait for September, it will soon be here, but stay focused on the rest of your studies and spending time with your family,

Good luck with it all,

Hi there,

I'm in 4th year now but i felt the exact same way before university started, just ready to get there and start!
First semester of university has work commitments obviously but i really feel its all about settling in to university life, meeting people and learning to be independent, There's loads of things to do and see - a very exciting time.
Good luck

Hi there,

Yes, I had the exact same feeling 3 years ago when I was starting. Good luck to you!

Hi Anon,

This is so normal! Even now I'm in fourth year I still get a bit bored after being back home for longer than 2 weeks. I think I associate university with being more independent, and while it's nice to be home I do crave the freedom I have back in Lancaster! I don't think it helps that I live in a village and can't drive, whereas in Lancaster I live in the city and there's lots of buses/trains.

I hope you enjoy university!

Totally understandable to be honest! I felt the same way going into uni, and even during the holidays - and I come from the city! I really enjoy the vibe at uni, being around other students as well. Wish you the best of luck for your remaining studies!

Hi there,

You're definitely not alone in feeling excited about starting university! While many people do feel nervous or scared about the transition, there are plenty of students who share your eagerness to meet new people, explore new opportunities, and truly be themselves. Your enthusiasm is a great strength and will help you build meaningful connections once you arrive. To help the time pass, consider joining online groups or forums related to your future university or course. This can give you a head start in making friends and feeling part of the community. Remember, university is a fantastic opportunity to create the experiences you’re looking forward to, and there are many others who are just as excited as you are. Hang in there, the wait will be worth it, and you'll soon be surrounded by like-minded individuals ready to embark on this new chapter with you!

Hi!

I am also from a tiny village and was so excited to go to uni and have independence and freedom to choose how I spend my time. I am now in my final year of undergrad and I have absolutely loved my time at uni, I have made so many great friends and love living in a place where the local shop is open later than 9pm haha. It sounds like you are going to love university as one of the biggest parts is being independent.

Hope this offers some encouragement! Faye 🙂

Hi there,

I definitely felt the same!

I was living between parents at that time and in small villages, so I never really felt like I belonged anywhere or could be myself. Going to university hugely opened everything up to me - it's such a great experience! While Chester isn't the largest city, it opened up so many doors. I was able to meet amazing friends, study a subject I love, and study abroad in the USA. There is truly so much to do.

If it helps, plan what you're excited for! Make a list of things you'd like to do and places you'd like to go. Get organized for university as early as you like, as it does pay off to be prepared. However, do make sure to make the most out of your time remaining before you leave, and enjoy where you are right now.

Best of luck to you,
