what are some good monolouges?

i have a assignment in my course for a “mock audition” to help us students be prepared for real uni auditions.

does anyone know any good ‘published play’ monologues that would be good? i’m really struggling to find some.

any help would be so appreciated!

Hi KatieMarie,

That sounds like an exciting assignment! Finding the right monologue can make a huge difference in showcasing your skills, so it’s great that you’re putting effort into choosing one. Here are a few suggestions for published play monologues that are popular for auditions:
Female Monologues:

1.

Viola from Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare: “Make me a willow cabin at your gate…” (great for showcasing classical skills).

2.

Nora from A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen: A powerful, dramatic piece about self-realisation.

3.

Harper from Angels in America by Tony Kushner: Emotional and modern, often used for contemporary auditions.

Male Monologues:

4.

Tom from The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams: Reflective and poetic, perfect for emotional depth.

5.

Hamlet from Hamlet by William Shakespeare: “To be or not to be…” (a classic but overused, so consider other parts of the play for something fresh).

6.

Prior Walter from Angels in America by Tony Kushner: A deeply moving modern piece.

Gender-Neutral/Contemporary Options:

7.

The character of Evelyn from The Shape of Things by Neil LaBute: A sharp and witty modern monologue.

8.

Joan from Saint Joan by George Bernard Shaw: A powerful historical role.

If you’re looking for resources to explore more monologues, try these:

The Monologue Archive (themonologuearchive.com): A great place for classic and modern pieces.

Backstage (backstage.com): Offers tips and lists for monologues used in auditions.

Samuel French (concordtheatricals.co.uk): They sell scripts and collections of monologues from published plays.

It’s a good idea to pick something that resonates with you and highlights your strengths as a performer. Break a leg with your mock audition—you’ve got this! 😊
