What are the best things for a year 10 to do during the holidays?

Hi,
I'm a year 10 with challenge grades mostly above 7s and it's again one of the times I don't particularly like- the holidays.
I'm usually a fast worker and somehow I've finished all my homework for the holidays before the holidays even started💀 now I feel kinda bored at home, I do have a biology and physics test coming up but I've revised a bit already using notes and some flashcards, now all I do is just sitting at home and play video games as there's absolutely nothing for me to do- and I feel kinda guilty for not doing work even though there's nothing to do, and I'm a bit worried that it's going to be what pulls my grades down in the future- not constantly reviewing what you've learnt so I might be under quite a bit of pressure in year 11, is that really the case? when I flick through my books and notes for the three sciences I find that I actually do remember quite a big chunk of the contents in year 9, and I just don't feel that it's necessary for me to go and 'revise' for them... but I just a bit worried about maths though, although I have a challenge grade of 9, but my school loves to do a lot of enrichment stuff like things in A-levels or AS, especially in my class with quite a few smart people, so often my brain just stops working and understands absolutely nothing in class although my classmates understands them perfectly well, so is it worth me doing just 'enriching stuff' for maths for fun-perhaps can help me in sixth form?occasionally I go out for some sports and play piano for fun(doing diploma), is what I'm doing fine or will it affect my challenge grades as year 10 is what they say that things are getting serious?
Thanks

Hey @Maxi2009 😆

Happy Holidays! I hope you had a lovely Christmas with your loved ones!

According to your questions, I got some advice for you: 😉

Do you need to review your notes constantly?

In my opinion, it is worth you to keep reviewing your notes but it does not mean only remembering and chunk them in your brain. Instead, the most important is you understand the theory behind it and can explain it. Remembering of course is essential for you to perform well in your exams but questions can always be asked differently, so reviewing in different ways like doing pass papers, having study groups with your friends and questioning yourself also helps!

About Maths:

Everyone has their own process to learn so first of all, don’t over-stress yourself. And you said you can challenge a grade 9, I am confident that you are absolutely smart! As you are a year 10 student now, it is better to focus on the academic curriculum of your year first. Just double-check that you understand everything about the maths you are learning now then slowly pick up some 'enriching stuff' that your school has. I believe schools have enriching teaching which are at a higher level because they think you can do it and it is not a bad thing to be prepared for your future study for A-level.

Extra curriculum activities and grade:💪🏻

Having different activities to do other than only focusing on your academics is always a good idea to balance your learning! Doing something that you enjoy is also important to destress from your academic and bring a positive effect to your mental health, so I support you to keep them up! Time management will be the skill that you need, for example, set the amount of time you spend on those extra curriculum activities and follow the schedule! It is a good skill that you can use for lifelong, especially in university! You may use a whiteboard to schedule your time of the day and follow, this method makes your time clear and makes sure you won’t miss out on any important tasks you need to do!

Last but not least, year 10 is not easy as you are preparing for your GCSE in year 11 but never forget to take care of your mental health. Always check on yourself and talk to someone if needed! If you lose motivation to study, create a study group with your friend. If you want to do something else during the holiday, doing a work placement experience can also be something you can think of! It can be really helpful to your personal statement to let you stand out when applying for university!

All the best and I hope my answers are helpful! 🍀

Best regards
Claudia (BSc Occupational therapy student) 🩵

Hello.

I got all grade 9s and completed my GCSEs last summer. In year 10 I mainly relaxed and made sure I had consolidated all the content learnt by then and made sure there were no gaps in my knowledge. I also started doing a bit of practice paper 1s

Hope this helps!

With maths it’s mainly just practice, the questions you don’t understand watch some maths genie walkthroughs of a paper and apply it to similar questions

Enrichment for maths won’t really help if you are struggling and isn’t needed when applying to sixth form. When applying to universities I’m pretty sure only activities done in Y12 and Y13 count. Correct me if I’m wrong

sounds like your doing absolutely fine to me ! try and relax and have fun, try a new hobby and fill ur time that way. I think, yes revising is a skill and doing well in school is so important but having the ability to relax and enjoy time off while not feeling guilty about work is also a MASSIVE skill thats so important to learn. I find especially when it comes to getting into higher education such as a level you need that ability to relax an have hobbies to take ur mind off things and give urself a break from high stress revision and school.
Honestly when your in year 10 please take this year to relax and enjoy school bc you soon come to realise that the stress of GCSEs are nothing compared to a level. Dont mean to sound so negative but enjoy your teen years when school is relatively chill! happy holidays
