Ask a current zoology (biological sciences) student anything!

Hi, I'm a second year Zoology student at University of Southampton. Ask me anything about zoology, biology or the wider biological sciences courses such as biomedical science or pharmacology - I'm here to help answer any questions, about the courses, applications or anything else!

What a levels did you do and what content from them became relevant in your degree?
What super and extracurriculars did you do and which would you recommend to make your application stand out?
What kind of practical work do you do on this course? And is it assessed?
What’s been your favourite module?

My A-levels were biology, chemistry, psychology and geography. Apart from biology being very important, I found that chemistry A-level really helped in first year especially with the compulsory chemistry of life module.

On applications I would recommend writing about subject specific interests or skills, and briefly mention extracurriculars to show transferable skills for the course. I did online work experience which I think is great when needing a more flexible schedule!

All biological science degrees at Southampton have a high volume of practical work which I think is great. In first year you learn all the basic lab skills needed, with lab write ups contributing to a small portion of each module. In second year I am finding that you get to do more specific lab work depending on modules.
