How much work experience should I do?

Hi,

I’m currently on Y12 hoping to study history at university. My dream is to be a university professor, but I’m also open to other fields like publishing, politics, teaching, museum work etc-

However, I’m struggling to find work experience/volunteer work that is not 18+…

I have found an opportunity for a week’s worth of work experience at the National Archives, which is ages 14-18, and plan to apply when applications open.

But, museums and publishing houses only seem to offer work experience for those over 18, and politics is just hard to come by.

Any advice? Would the work experience at the archives be enough alongside:

Books I’ve read.

Visiting museums and other historical places.

Essay competition that starts late January 2025.

Skills I’ve gained from my A-level studies.

Lectures I have attended online and in person.

Or would I need more work experience?

Thank you!

History is an academic degree. Work experience isn’t required in any form.

Sorry, I should’ve made it clear that I am aware of this! I just want to do some work experience to add to my personal statement, and was wondering if I needed to do a certain amount.

I assumed that the archive work would be enough, since it’s related to the subject and my chosen career path. But, I wanted to clarify!

Thank you for clarifying this for me!!

Plus, I’m just interested in exploring fields I could go into after uni! But, I guess I can do more of that during my degree.

You would be better off doing detailed research into the periods and topics covered in a history degree at each of your choices. A PS that talks about a period or topic that isn’t covered by one of your choices is much more of an issue than work experience.

History is one of the most diverse degrees where the content covered can be completely different even though the course title is identical.

Have you looked at the prospects website?

Don’t worry, I intend to do this! But, I still want to do the national archive work experience, just because I’m interested in it and because I want to talk about it in my personal statement when discussing why I want to be a university professor. Even if it’s not required, I want to add it to show my engagement and dedication to the subject.

Plus, my sixth form is expecting everyone, regardless of course, to some work experience/volunteer work at least once before Y13. Whether it’s in a hospital or in a supermarket, they want us to do some.

That’s why I’ve been looking for work experience relevant to history or sectors I’m interesting in going to afterwards. (yes, I have looked at prospects!) So, when I stumbled upon this National Archive work experience, I thought it would be a good fit.

I just wanted some clarification of whether or not
I needed more, or if doing 1 week of work experience would be enough.

But, like you said, history is an academic subject, so this will probably be enough to satisfy my school, me and be a good inclusion to my personal statement.

Hope that explains my thought process lol!

“I just wanted some clarification of whether or not I needed more, or if doing 1 week of work experience would be enough”
and this was the question I was answering. You don’t need any work experience for a history degree.

If you find experiences you find interesting then go for it and enjoy them. But do them because you find them interesting and enjoyable not for your degree application.
