absences stress !!!!!

hiii!

okay gosh long story
im a y12, i take maths, further maths and physics
we have a holiday booked next year, two weeks in term time, because 1) my mum has had cancer and the last year has been so so stressful for all of us, 2) my brother is having a wedding abroad and 3) we can't afford a holiday during school holiday time.

im worried that my school won't authorise it, and it falls during may - im genuinely so scared that this holiday, if unauthorised, will affect my ucas references for my uni applications. my form tutor said that they're obliged to mention our attendance, but if it's authorised they can't criticise us on low attendance. with what i've already had off, and given an extra 10 days, if the avg. school year is 190 days ill have 93% attendance by july.

what if i take this holiday off if it's unauthorised and i don't get into university??? is attendance all that important for university applications?? will people at uni of manc look at my ucas application and think "pfft what a loser this girl got A*A*A but missed three weeks in year 12" im freaking out!!!!

First of all, I am so sorry to hear about all the stress and pressures you have been though. You have been very brave and strong to be able to get though all that ❤️.

To answer your query: attendance is important. But that is seen as an average throughout the years you have been attending this school. And if you get the grade, while having had a break between, it shows that you do work hard when you are at school and have worked hard to catch up, when the teacher covered the course. 93 percent attendance is really high and two weeks is not that long, as long as you can catch up. If you are so worried, ask the teacher what you will be missing and if there are materials that they can give you before you leave.

"Don't be afraid of the unknown. It will be worser if you don't even try." That's one of my quotes.
If you have a valid reason, then they don't have that much of a reason to count it as 'unauthorised'.
Hope that helps!!

It will be unauthorised but surely your school know the circumstances? I can't see this being mentioned in a UCAS reference.

Universities won't care about an absence this minor (3% of your 2-year course) as long as you get the results. If you stay up to date on work or just work a little (10%) harder in general, you'll have no problems.

If the "pfft what a loser this girl got A*A*A but missed three weeks in year 12" sounds ridiculous to you, it's because it is! No need to worry about it!

My school put so much pressure on us to have perfect attendance as they said they’d mention the exact percentage on our UCAS reference. I took this to heart and got 100% attendance in year 12 and have so far only missed one day in year 13 for a funeral, so I sometimes came into school when I was too ill to do so. And then I saw my reference the other week and all they said was that I have “good attendance and punctuality”. So it was pretty much pointless to put in so much stress and pressure and risk my physical health for it. Obviously I can’t speak for all schools but honestly they have no requirement to put your percentage attendance, plus they only want to say good things about you so you get into a good uni anyways.
