hey, is self-catered any less sociable then catered? & which works out more expensive?

You do the maths - cheapest catered is 138 a week, or 110 if you go for a shared room.

Cheapest self catered is 81 a week, or 56 if you have a shared room.

Are you going to be spending around £55 a week on food to balance out the cost of not being catered? I think not, given that on top of the rent at Pollock you also have to pay for your lunch at say £3 per day, so £21 a week.

With regards to the social nature, read the rest of this thread and do a search. That topic has been discussed to death and it's a case of it being as broad as long.

Quick question: Which is a shorter walk to George Square (specifically, David Hume): Darroch Court or South Clerk Street?

Thanks!

Same distance I'd say. You're talking about a 5-7 minute walk against a 5-7 minute walk. Darroch is directly against the upper end of GS, whereas SCS is closer to DHT... but then it's further down the road from here.

Highly doubt all of your lectures and tutorials are specifcally going to be in DHT anyway - you might have to venture as far as Appleton or Buccleugh Place, heaven forbid.

Kincaids, Rebertson close, Darroch, New Athur place

Hey i am a current 1st year!!! So i thot i wud gave u my input as last year i was so confused and more so because i was irish and had only been here for an openin day!!! Anyhow, i live in kincaids court and love it!!! the rooms are big i live in a 5 person flat all girls we have 2 bathroom and a kitchen/living however there are 12 person flats in kicaids aswell with HUGE living rooms/kitchen and tons of bathrooms. Its a super location near all the student clubs and bars. People do say its noisey but i dont think it is that bad. There is a few bars near 1 beside but that is the same with Robertson close there is 1 across and 1 below them but every1 i know does not mind it however kinciads flats are more uptodate  both these halls are lik 5 mins apart lol.
On to Darroch they are really nice flats and less noise and u get a washing machince. New Athur's place is almost rite beside darroch again away from the noise but they not as nice as darroch but still nice lol. Hope this helps for me self catered was right as i knew i would come in wanted food after a night out. Hope this helps all these halls are really in the heart of the city!!!!
Just looking into applying for accomidation and am wondering and if somebody could tell me a little about South College Street and 5 Nicholson Street, as I don't think they've been mentioned on here much before.
Sort of things I'm interested in is quality of rooms/distance from New College/noiseyness etc of the roads.
Thanks
1. Warrender Park Road
2. Warrender Park Crescent
3. Sciennes

I wonder where I'll end up...
Okay, question.

If you do not live in university accommodation, is it much more difficult to make friends? It looks like I might be staying with some people I already know in Edinburgh, but I am slightly worried that not living with other students might make things difficult.

People in your accommodation are only some of the people that you'll meet. For some people their best friends are made through sharing accommodation but for lots of people better friends are made through courses, societies and general activity in the outside world. It's all down to what your attitude is and how you behave. It is nice to have an automatic group of people to go out with for the first few weeks, but if you're confident enough just to go out on your own, you don't even need that. After the first few weeks you'll have found people through all sorts of different means.

Okay, that is what I was hoping would be true. Thanks for the advice!

I didn't get an accom offer until the first few days of September, the week before I left for Edinburgh..! So don't wait up for it :p:

I know July would be wishful thinking haha.
Hiya,
Does anyone know anywhere you can put a bike if you stay in Blackfriars? I'm trying to decide where to apply for accommodation and the website says there isn't any cycle storage, is there anywhere near that people store their bikes? Thanks for any help

Ok, I applied for:

1. New Arthur Place
2. 5 Nicolson
3. Hermit's Croft

(And yes, I know how likely it is for me to get placed somewhere else altogether:smile:
Anyone know what Baird House, Ewing House, Grant House Lee House or Turner House are like? I want to go catered but I don't think i can afford the en-suite halls. Also, is sharing a bathroom as bad as it sounds?

Hey guys, say if i chose Darroch Court, Chancellor, Fraser/Black Friar, what would you put in preference order???
In the self-catered accomodation, are the floors locked or open? As in, if I was say, staying in college wynd or kincaid's, could I go up to meet somebody from a different landing without them having to let me into the corridor?
Strange question I know, but my friend (who goes to another uni) seems to think it's restrictive to have locked floors?

The s/c flats are blocks of flats - you have access to the stairwell all the way up from the front door. There aren't corridors on floors or anything like that. But you can meet your friends anywhere on the stairs.

Sorry, just one more question before I apply! I really like the look of 5 Nicholson, so do you think its worth applying for small and standard accomodation there, and taking up two of my options on the same place?

In all likelihood you'll be put where ever they decide to put you, your selection now doesn't mean that you'll end up living in one of these three. Most people I knew didn't get where they wanted anyway. So you may as well put whatever preference you like then see where you end up, so there is nothing wrong with putting the same place twice or three times if you want to do so.

The difference in room size is probably negligible. Apply for small rooms everywhere to save yourself the money - room "sizes" have been turned into a cash cow by accommodation services, don't be milked!
